“Andor is by far the most political story”: A Mexican Lead, Lesbian Couple, Obvious Leftism Is All the Proof That People Don’t Hate ‘Real Wokeness’ in Star Wars

Star Wars, at least according to its fans, seems to have fallen into a trap that keeps its audience from engaging with the content that it is putting forth. The issue here was never that it was ‘woke’, but that it was simply badly written. The most telltale sign of this practice of rotten storytelling was the fact that Andor, a story that had a lot of ‘woke’ elements to it, was well received, with no criticisms for what the story had to offer.

A lot of bad writing that has come out of Star Wars has often been attributed to how woke the stories have gotten, Andor stands as a key example of how the woke themes have nothing to do with bad writing, and could actually deliver the best stories that the franchise has to offer.

Andor proves big time that Star Wars is just badly written most of the time

Reddit has been circling on the topic of why Andor, the show, was so noncontroversial when compared to the rest of the shows and content that Disney put out under the Star Wars banner. The answer is pretty simple: the show actually had competent characters and a believable plot line, which was consistent throughout the show, unlike most of the other offerings, which seemed to play around with caricatures rather than well-rounded characters.

The politics that Andor depicts are pretty blatant, forming a core part of the story. However, that story does not brush over the very real-life implications of its politics, and how it would haunt its characters every step of the way. Every choice, regardless of how small, has a consequence that the characters need to run from.

Star Wars needs to take its lessons from Andor

There has been a lot of talk about how Star Wars is going to go ahead. With a slew of projects announced that are pending updates, there is a lot of uncertainty about the future of Star Wars. Andor and The Mandalorian seem to have provided quite the blueprint for the franchise going forward, but there is one thing that the franchise really needs to do right.

A good way forward is to make good on the promise of moving away from the Skywalkers, who seem to be finding their way in stories that could have otherwise been done without them. Having stories that focus on characters that have nothing to do with The Skywalker Saga might be the way forward for the franchise, where it can leave the controversies that it has stirred up behind, and focus on developing genuine new characters that are untethered to the past.

Andor Season 2 begins streaming on April 22, 2025
