Akira Toriyama Didn’t Create a Legendary Saiyan Character but That’s No Reason for Dragon Ball to Treat Him like the Anti-christ

Dragon Ball franchise has had many installments, and not all of them were the work of Akira Toriyama. Even though these works were not canon and were only there to engage the fans and stir up interest, there were some things that the fans loved a lot.

Broly is one of Dragon Ball‘s most iconic characters, and he was originally meant to be part of a spin-off tale about the Saiyan heritage. The fans loved Broly so much that he was incorporated into most of the Dragon Ball games, including Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and Xenoverse.

Broly even became canon in Dragon Ball Super through Dragon Ball Super: Broly, a 2018 movie. But his place in the franchise has always been a matter of discussion. He never seemed to be included in anything important and it felt like the creators were trying to desperately avoid Broly.

Why Dragon Ball needs to treat Broly better

Originally introduced in Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan (1993), Broly was created by Takao Koyama, not Akira Toriyama, who created the Dragon Ball franchise.

However, that doesn’t mean that Broly, who is so loved by the fans, is some kind of outsider or invader who doesn’t belong in the Dragon Ball universe. In fact, Toriyama later took Broly’s foundation refined him into a more layered character, and re-introduced him to make him canon in Dragon Ball Super: Broly.

This signifies the approval of the creator himself when it comes to Broly. Although Toriyama has passed on, it is time for Toyotarou to take charge and include Broly in the main narrative.

Toyotarou has complete freedom to choose how to integrate this Saiyan warrior into his stories, but one thing is for certain. It is a tremendous waste of Broly’s potential to keep him out of anything substantial.

Broly’s future in the Dragon Ball franchise

The entire story of Dragon Ball has changed to show the dominance of the Saiyan across the universe. The main characters, be it Goku, Vegeta, or Gohan, are some of the strongest beings in existence, capable of contending with gods and angels.

This only goes to say that with the addition of Broly, who is the Legendary Super Saiyan, things can only get more interesting. Although the movie took a negative turn and showed Broly to be a cruel and selfish villain, Toyotarou could change this if he wished.

Even if it was not possible and Broly was included in the narrative as an evil being, the story would have an added dimension to it. Just like Raditz, there are some Saiyans who do not approve of what Goku (and now Vegeta) and his family are doing.

Having Broly as an antagonist would increase the influence of Saiyans in the story. Broly isn’t just another fighter, he represents an entirely different path of Saiyan evolution. He could lead to many epic fights, transformations, and even power-ups that the current Saiyans have no idea about.

Dragon Ball manga is available to read on Viz Media, and the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll. Dragon Ball Super: Broly is available to stream on DisneyPlus.
