Activision Planning on Reviving Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater Is a Surprising and Unexpected Comeback

The impact of Tony Hawk on the world of pro skateboarding video games is quite understated, and the series is widely considered the best skateboarding video game series out there. The series debuted with its first entry back in 1999 for the PlayStation 1, under the alias of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater.

However, ever since the launch of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 (back in 2020), the series has seen a slump of sorts, with no mainline titles or remasters being released to date. However, things could change very soon, and the revival of the legendary Tony Hawk franchise is all but a matter of time.

Tyshawn Jones hints at a possible, upcoming Tony Hawk release

Speaking at the Breakfast Club Podcast, professional skater Tyshawn Jones mentioned that a new Tony Hawk game might be in the works.

I’m in a Tony Hawk coming out…they got a new one they remastered that’s about to come out.

For the uninitiated, Tyshawn Jones is a professional American skateboarder who rose to fame back in 2019 and continues skateboarding to this day.

Readers might also remember Tyshawn from Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, being heavily featured in the game. Speaking more about his legacy and career, he recalled the days when he played a lot of Skate as a child, and interestingly let slip the fact that he was in an upcoming Tony Hawk game.

Curiously, he did also mention that a new game was being released in the form of a ‘remaster’, which could be very much like Pro Skater 1 + 2’s release. This, coupled with the fact that Tony Hawk himself explicitly said that there would be a ‘future’ for the franchise makes one ponder on the possibility of a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 remaster sometime in the near future.

After all, it’s been over 25 years since the original Tony Hawk game was released to the masses – and now would be a good time as any to bring back the series from the grave, with a remaster of the canned 3 + 4 project being the perfect option here.

It’s about time for a new Tony Hawk game

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 was unfortunately canceled following the launch of 1 + 2, which can be attributed to Activision’s plethora of weird decision-making misadventures. Skate is pretty much abandoned at this point, and should the stars align (which they hopefully do), we might just have our first Tony Hawk game in 5 years – albeit in the form of a remaster.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 was released as an effort to bring older classics into the high-definition era, complete with updated textures, maps, soundtracks, and controls. The remaster was brilliantly executed and kept the core gameplay intact while modernizing some aspects to enhance the experience.

It would make perfect sense to remake Pro Skater 3 + 4 at this point – given that it was already in active development for quite some time, and building a new game from scratch would be quite unlikely for a franchise that has been dormant for this long.

With the funding from Microsoft (after acquiring Activision Blizzard recently), this could just be the break that the Tony Hawk series needs – and a good time as any for yet another Game Pass day one release.
