Meta parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, announced a major policy shift. CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed plans to prioritize free speech while reducing fact-checking and censorship.
Focus is on addressing political content more openly marking a departure from the strict moderation policies previously in place.
In a video message Zuckerberg stated Meta aims to support open opinions, especially in countries where governments pressure U.S. companies for censorship. He added that company intends to collaborate with figures like former President Donald Trump to counter such pressures.
Reduction of Fact-Checking: Meta plans to significantly scale back its fact-checking operations on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Instead, it will introduce “community notes,” similar to approach used by social platform X (formerly Twitter).
Focus on Political Content: More visibility will be given to political discussions, with fewer restrictions on topics like gender and immigration. This move aims to foster global user expression and minimize censorship.
Partnership with Trump: Meta is aligning its efforts with Trump to advocate for free speech and challenge global censorship. Trump, who once criticized Facebook as “enemy of the people,” now supports Meta’s direction.
Meta’s decision comes amidst criticism over political bias and ineffectiveness of its fact-checking system. Zuckerberg acknowledged that previous policies eroded trust and failed to deliver desired outcomes.
Former President Trump and other prominent figures welcomed this shift. Announcement coincided with organizational changes within Meta including leadership transitions and Republican Jewell Kaplan taking a key role.
Meta’s policy overhaul reflects its intent to redefine user engagement, counter censorship and emphasize free expression worldwide.
