Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is spreading across multiple countries, including China, Malaysia, and Hong Kong.
India has also reported cases of this virus with two children in Bengaluru confirmed to be infected according to NDTV.
Emergence of HMPV has also raised concerns in Japan, where health experts are monitoring the situation closely.
In China, HMPV is causing a surge in hospital admissions, particularly among children, reminiscent of the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following reports from Malaysia, the country’s health ministry has urged the public to adopt preventive measures such as wearing masks and washing hands frequently, as reported by The Economic Times.
In Bengaluru two children, aged three and eight months, tested positive for HMPV during routine respiratory illness screenings.
While the three-month-old has recovered eight-month-old remains hospitalized. Health officials confirmed that the infected children and their families had no travel history suggesting local transmission.
Hong Kong has also reported a small number of cases, while Japan remains on high alert, with media outlets highlighting the need for vigilance.
