The nominees for the 2024 Game Awards have been revealed and Black Myth: Wukong is one title that stands out from the rest. With a Metacritic score of 81/100, it is the lowest-rated game ever to be nominated for the Game of the Year award. However, with love coming in from all corners of the world, it wouldn’t surprise anyone if this title wins it all.
We have to remember that when Black Myth: Wukong first launched back in August 2024, it ended up breaking all kinds of records on Steam. Even today, this title reigns as the most concurrently played single-player game on the platform. So, there is a very real chance that it will end up claiming the Game of the Year award.
Black Myth Wukong can become the first Asian game to win the GOTY award
The Game Award for Game of the Year was first awarded in 2014. Since then, no game developed by an Asian studio has ever been able to claim the award. The last time one such game came close was Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding back in 2020.
What is a cause of concern is the fact that even Death Stranding couldn’t win despite having a better Metacritic score than Black Myth: Wukong. Wukong scored 81/100 on PC and 76/100 on the PS5, while Death Stranding had a score of 82/100, so things aren’t looking all that great.
So, while this title does have the chance to make history by breaking the Game of the Year curse, it wouldn’t be surprising if it falls short. People are still arguing over whether this game deserves to be nominated so winning it might be a bit of a long shot.
Does Black Myth Wukong deserve to win Game of the Year?
Many will argue that Black Myth: Wukong doesn’t deserve to win the Game of the Year award because of its low Metacritic score. However, it is important to remember that Metacritic scores aren’t an exact science. Instead, they’re more of a way to gauge how well a game has been received on launch.
Now while the game did have a few rough edges upon its release, it has been refined to a point where it runs flawlessly on most machines. Moreover, even though it was one of the most hyped games of the year, Game Science was able to deliver without succumbing to the pressure. What came out was a beautiful and detailed single-player adventure like no other.
If it wasn’t for the West’s alleged bias against Asian studios, chances are that Wukong would’ve been labeled as a masterpiece. What do you think about Black Myth: Wukong‘s GOTY nomination? Let us know in the comments below.
