“I didn’t think I was good enough”: ‘Landman’ Star Billy Bob Thornton on Why His Angelina Jolie Affair Was Doomed from Start

When one thinks of Angelina Jolie’s personal life, one of the first names to be brought up is that of Brad Pitt. The two had a whirlwind of a romance that ended in just as bright a fire as the spark they felt on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The tales of their divorce still echo in the empty mansions of Hollywood, and while years have passed since they parted ways, they cannot seem to outrun their names being put together.

While there is no denying that their relationship was one of the most publicly iconic of all time, many seem to forget about their romances before they got together. Although Pitt’s infamous alleged betrayal of Jennifer Anniston is still remembered in vivid detail, Jolie’s marriage with Billy Bob Thornton seems to be lost in the mix.

Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton Had Quite a Romance

Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton were married to each other from 2000-2003. However, their romance wasn’t any less filled with drama than the actress’ relationship with Brad Pitt. Starting off, Thornton was in a very public relationship with Laura Dern, with both of them being engaged.

However, in 1999, the star ended up going to film a project with Jolie, titled Pushing Tin. The very next year, they both eloped.

I left our home to work on a movie, and while I was away, my boyfriend got married, and I’ve never heard from him again.

During an interview with The Talk (via ABC), Dern gave her perspective on what happened, confessing that she was allegedly ghosted by Thornton, who got married to someone else while they were still together. However, after they got married, the pair were passionate in every definition of the word.

They were being spotted and photographed everywhere they went; Jolie got his name tattooed on her arm, and they even adopted a child together. However, the very same year that they became parents together, they ended up getting divorced, with Jolie getting custody of their baby.

Billy Bob Thornton’s Insecurities Killed His Relationship with Angelina Jolie

Although Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton had a very public relationship at the time, there isn’t much known about why they ended up breaking up. However, during an older interview with Nightline, he talked about why he thinks their relationship ended, and he seems to be giving himself most of the blame.

I blew it because I didn’t think I was good enough for her. She has one way she wanted to live her life and I had another way to live mine and I was just too insecure.

The Landman actor revealed that he was deeply insecure about his relationship with Jolie. He further elaborated on the same, confessing that he never felt good enough to be in a relationship with her, with her being the icon that she is. Due to this, they seemed to have butt heads a lot, with the actor mentioning that they had very different ways that they wanted to live their respective lives.

I did feel like the Phantom of the Opera hiding in the catacombs. People have actually said that I didn’t deserve to be with her.

Further in the interview, Thornton also mentioned that he felt like he did not deserve Jolie, with many actually having said this to his face. Considering how high-profile and public their relationship was, it is not surprising that the opinions of the masses ended up affecting them personally.
