Katy Perry is easily one of the most sought-after singer-songwriters out there, with a plethora of chart-topping songs to her name. Apart from her musical endeavors, the pop icon has also been a judge on the famous singing competition show American Idol since 2018. While she is used to big moments both in real life and on the show, one performance on American Idol really caught her off guard.
A contestant stepped on stage and sang her record-breaking hit Firework. While the singer herself had requested the contestant to do so, she soon regretted her decision as the contestant sang the song even better than her.

Katy Perry is a powerhouse to be reckoned with in the world of music, but one contestant completely left her stunned on American Idol, that too with a spoon in her hand. Sierra Harris stepped onto the stage with a spoon in her hand and jokingly explained, “I’m scooping up my talent and throwing it at you.”
While this surely intrigued Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Katy Perry, who then started chatting with her about her upbringing.
When it came to her performance, Harris confidently said that she’d be performing Barracuda by Heart. While her powerful voice caught everyone by surprise, Bryan said that it sounded more like a “caricature song.” After this, Perry quickly said, “Can you sing Firework?” and Harris immediately started singing the song.
Listening to her, Perry hilariously threw away her mic and put her head down, with both Richie and Bryan trying to calm her down. While she was only joking, she continued by saying that the only purpose of asking Harris to sing Firework was that it’s a challenging song. Much to her surprise, she completely slayed it and asked her to rely solely on her singing talent rather than on her over-the-top theatrics.
Sierra Harris took this in stride and added this is how she really is in real life. Ultimately, all three of the judges saw the real potential in her and added that if she applied their feedback, she would go very far in the competition. So, naturally, she received three yes votes and made a promise that she’d make them proud.
Harris was a part of American Idol Season 21, and her journey in the competition concluded during Hollywood Week in 2023.
Katy Perry responds to backlash after working with Dr. Luke
Katy Perry is marking her return to music, and while this has been a great moment of joy for her fans, one decision of hers has put her in a negative light as well. While her Woman’s World music video left many confused, her decision to collaborate with producer Dr. Luke has pushed a storm of controversy her way.
The producer has been a contentious figure since 2014 when singer Kesha sued him and brought in some very serious accusations against him.
During this time, Taylor Swift stepped up to offer a shoulder of support to Kesha, while the industry maintained its distance from Dr. Luke. Because of this, fans are not happy that Perry is working with him for her upcoming album, 143.
Initially, she didn’t respond to the backlash, but during a Call Her Daddy via Variety appearance, she detailed her thoughts on the matter. She added:
Look I understand that it started a lot of conversations and he was one of many collaborators that I collaborated with. But the reality is, it comes from me. The truth is, I wrote these songs from my experience of my whole life going through this metamorphosis, and he was one of the people to help facilitate all that.
She continued:
[He’s] one of the writers, one of the producers. I am speaking from my own experience.
Despite her upfront response, many fans weren’t convinced and even called her out on social media. While the album is quite close to her heart, as she sees it as a reflection of her own journey, the issue with Dr. Luke isn’t going away anytime soon for sure.
