Abandoned Spanish theme park to finally reopen with £165million plans including upgraded rides and hotel

THE abandoned Tivoli World theme park in Spain has finally been given the go-ahead to reopen – four years after being forced to close.

The Spanish attraction closed in 2020 during the pandemic and has been left vacant for years, but it will reopen thanks to a huge investment.

Tivoli World, on the Costa del Sol, was named after the famous Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen.

Having opened in 1972, the on 60,000sqm park was once the biggest theme park in the region.

There have been lots of campaigns to get it up and running again since it’s closure in 2020, either as a theme park again or even other uses such as a shopping centre.

However, the local government is set to sign an agreement with the Tremon real estate group who will restore Tivoli World.

The contract states they will reopen Tivoli World as an ‘amusement park’ and ‘tourist and commercial complex’.

The redevelopment of the abandoned park won’t come cheap as it is estimated to cost €200million (£165 million).

The high cost is due to a lot of the infrastructure being left to decay, with reports saying just 27 rides remain intact of the 85.

For anyone planning a visit, the construction is estimated to take up to three years to complete, meaning the earliest opening date is 2028.

Along with the plans for the park to be restored and modernised, a new hotel will be built on the site.

Tivoli World was once known for having rides such as Ferris wheels, The Castle of Terror, a free fall from 60metres, the Mysterious Ship and the Western village.

They also had an open air auditorium which often featured top national and international artists.

Thanks to its location on the Costa del Sol, the amusement park is a five-minute walk from the nearby beach.

It was incredibly popular and saw a huge 35million guests through its doors.

Inmaculada Nieto, an Andalucía MP, previously said: “Tivoli belongs to the sentimental memory of several generations of people in Andalucía who, thanks to these facilities, was the first amusement park we had the chance to go to.

“This would be a profitable venture today. Legally there is no impediment to it being able to open its doors.”

“Tivoli goes beyond the limits of Benalmádena and the province of Malaga, it is a strategic issue for tourism on the whole of the Costa del Sol and Andalucía.”

Lots of reviewers called it a “traditional theme park” with others saying it reminded them of “the 80s” – with new refurbishment, the whole look of the park is bound to change.

While the building of Tivoli World gets underway, here’s the biggest Spanish theme park to visit.
