VIDEO: Henry Cavill Fans Will Hate It But Antony Starr Had a Better Audition For James Bond

It is not every day that two superheroes battle it out for a role but the audition tapes of Henry Cavill and Antony Starr for James Bond from 2005 have been released. The two join two other stars Rupert Friend and Sam Worthington to be 007 but all four ultimately lost out the role to Daniel Craig.

Cavill has long been considered to be the perfect man for James Bond. The actor seemingly received endorsement from Casino Royale director Martin Campbell but it never came to be. However, the audition tapes reveal that Cavill had stiff competition from the Homelander actor, who was a relative unknown back then.

Antony Starr may have bested Henry Cavill in James Bond audition tapes

While Henry Cavill seems to be tailor-made for the role of James Bond, The Boys actor Antony Starr seemed to be a bit of a wild card for the spy role. The audition tapes of the stars, along with Sam Worthington and Rupert Friend, were leaked by YouTuber Ron South, who reportedly found the VHS tapes in a movie studio bin.

Cavill is seen in his signature Brit look, recreating a scene from Pierce Brosnan’s GoldenEye. While the Superman star killed it in the flirtatious scene, he seemed to fall short as he eventually lost the role to Daniel Craig. The star was Agent 007 for fifteen years, with his character finally dying in No Time to Die.

However, Antony Starr was a surprisingly accurate James Bond, despite his origins New Zealand accent. While it is a bit tough to move past the Homelander bits in his face, Starr seemed to more or less bring in the suave and sophistication of Bond. Several fans even pointed him out to be the winner.

Honestly the best one out of these 4 auditions

He’s actually pretty good he has something there I honestly think he could have played Sean Bean’s role in Goldeneye if he didn’t get the part

Antony Starr was cool and could have been a great 007. Rupert Friend also was OK at the audition. I didn’t enjoy too much the videos of Henry Cavill and Sam Worthington.

Out of all the ones you’ve uploaded so far, Starr seems to be the best fit in my eyes. Have we got any more of these to look forward to Ron?

It is actually pretty hilarious to see two Supermen (Homelander is basically evil Superman) hash it out to play James Bond. Neither of them won the role and Starr clearly outlasted Cavill in his tenure as the one with the red and blue suit.

Henry Cavill had the approval of Casino Royale director Martin Campbell

With the James Bond franchise being handled by Amazon-MGM studios now, a new 007 may be on the horizon, which makes the audition tapes leak perfectly timed. Daniel Craig was one of the better Bonds in the franchise and despite his reluctance to continue, his tenure did revive the franchise and save it from its campy Pierce Brosnan days.

Before Craig got the role, however, Henry Cavill was reportedly in contention for the role and had even reached a pretty good spot. Director Martin Campbell, who directed the first Craig Bond film Casino Royale, reportedly approved of him but there was one catch (via Games Radar),

He looked great in the audition. His acting was tremendous. And look, if Daniel didn’t exist Henry would have made an excellent Bond. He looked terrific, he was in great physical shape… very handsome, very chiseled. He just looked a little young at that time back then.

Cavill reportedly was 23 back then and was considered too young for the part. He is still being campaigned by fans for the role but his position as former Superman and a future Wolverine may have hampered his chances.
