Tom Selleck Is ‘Very Open’ to Coming Back as Frank Reagan in Donnie Wahlberg’s ‘Blue Bloods’ Offshoot

Blue Bloods fans are rejoicing amid news that the franchise is expanding with the new CBS show Boston Blue starring Donnie Wahlberg, and sources say Tom Selleck is “open” to making an appearance.

“Tom’s been pretty vocal when it comes to his feelings about the network ending Blue Bloods,” an insider exclusively tells Closer. “He did not want to say goodbye to that role, so naturally he’s very open to coming back and doing cameos on Donnie’s show.”

In addition to starring in the new show, Donnie, 55, will also serve as an executive producer of Boston Blue, a Boston-based offshoot of Blue Bloods. He will be once again portraying the character Danny Reagan, who will embark on a new journey as he takes a position with Boston PD.

While CBS announced that the new Boston-based show would premiere during the 2025-2026 season, they did not announce who else will be starring in the series. One thing that’s for certain is that Tom, 80, and Donnie’s bond has continued despite Blue Bloods ending after 14 seasons in December 2024.

“They are still very close, over the nearly 15 years they worked together they developed such a fantastic relationship,” the insider reveals. “They’re genuine friends, in a lot of ways they grew to be like family, that’s how bonded they were.”

“They both got emotional filming their last dinner scene on Blue Bloods because it was the last, but now that this series is happening, they may get to do another,” the source adds. “It’s set in Boston so it won’t be a regular family dinner thing like on the last show but there’s the potential and Tom would be all for doing it.”

It’s no secret that the final days on the Blue Bloods set were very emotional, and the cast members themselves revealed that tears were flowing on set.

“I think when we finished filming is what I’ll remember most,” Donnie recalled in a December 2024 interview with Entertainment Weekly. “We all just kind of sat there for a long time, and I think everyone was hesitating to say something to say goodbye because A, nobody wanted to, and B, everyone knew once somebody starts talking, it’s a wrap. The tissues are coming out and everyone’s going to start crying, and sure enough they did.”

“I remember Tom read a poem — or, he didn’t read it. He’d memorized the poem and recited it,” the New Kids on the Block singer continued. “He’s known the poem for years, and he did that from time to time. He would say a poem or he would quote some old famous saying or something. He would always just drop these sage little things upon us at dinner from time to time.”

Donnie said that after hearing Tom’s poem, he “started crying and didn’t stop for a few hours.” The tender moment transported him back to his childhood when he would watch Tom on TV.

“Of course, I felt all the emotion of the crew and the rest of the cast members, but that moment I thought about how when I’d be watching him on TV, my mom would be sitting right behind me, right with my grandma, and they’re both gone now,” Donnie said. “And how profound it was that somehow my life’s journey had taken me to this moment, and I just couldn’t help but feel incredibly blessed and incredibly grateful in that moment. And then it was my time to talk next, and that was really messy. I could barely get a word out.”
