It’s rare for women’s health topics to be discussed in the public forum, let alone in Hollywood. Still, despite the subject of fertility issues being supposedly uncomfortable for others, several actresses have spoken up about the difficulties they faced.
Recently, Florence Pugh had to deal with a horrifying revelation about her health and future chances of motherhood. The We Live in Time actress spoke about her decision to freeze her eggs, a step that initially shocked her due to her family history. Pugh confessed being diagnosed with a medical condition that destabilized her chances of getting pregnant felt bizarre given how women in her family had never dealt with such issues.
Why did the actress freeze her eggs at 28?
Florence Pugh sat down for a rather interesting and unconventional conversation with Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi and Mary Alice Haney on the She MD podcast. The Little Women star had a lot to discuss about her reproductive health and also faced some hard truths about her fertility health.
The Midsommar actress revealed that a strange premonition through her dreams first landed her at her doctor’s doorstep. She began to worry about her health and came to Dr. Aliabadi for her honest opinion. This was when she was told to get her eggs counted.
At the young age of 27 years, Pugh might not have expected to be facing some severe problems. Unfortunately, the results came out and she got diagnosed with PCOS and endometriosis. This is when she was medically advised to get her eggs frozen, a step she never thought she’d have to take.
The Dune: Part Two actress revealed that her family included a list of robust women who faced little to no pregnancy-related issues. That genetics and history made her believe it would be the same for her, but this was her much-needed rude awakening.
The Wonder lead was befuddled as her dreams slowly started cracking, confessing she dreamt of having kids from a young age. Fortunately, Pugh discovered her medical condition at an early stage and rushed to freeze her eggs.
The hoax around women’s fertility issues
Pugh mentioned she was thankful to have discovered her condition in the initial check-up but sadly her doctors back home rejected the diagnosis. The Black Widow actress was told she couldn’t face fertility issues at her age and the prognosis was wrong (via Glamour Magazine).
this is just so emblematic of how women’s health isn’t taken seriously by medical professionals and women need to be their own health advocates like you can be FLORENCE PUGH and someone will still deny your health issues bc you’re still a woman

imagine how many people who were misdiagnosed because they can’t afford to have a second opinion

That’s crap. I had PCOS and I was 30, but I obviously had it way before that. I wish I had been diagnosed sooner b/c I may have been able to have kids then

This is such a frustrating but classic example of how women’s health issues are often dismissed. Like, how is age the deciding factor for PCOS? Did the ovaries not get the memo, Dr. London?

Florence Pugh’s story highlights the importance of receiving compassionate and correct medical care. No one’s age or experiences should be dismissed.

This is not the first time women have been disparaged or overlooked for their reproductive health. F.R.I.E.N.D.S alum Jennifer Aniston also faced a similar and more controversial public and media slander for the issue.
For her 2022 cover for the Allure magazine, Aniston opened up about the time she was facing fertility issues while trying to get pregnant. She also spoke about the hurtful commentary issued against her, claiming she was selfish for not having children.
The Murder Mystery lead also addressed the absurd rumors and speculation that arose after her separation from ex-husband Brad Pitt. Recalling the public smear campaign and attempts to malign her character, Aniston stated the public was cruel to women without children (via BBC).
