Following a violent clash between students and residents of a community, Former Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Charles Aheto-Tsegah, has urged parents to work closely with schools to maintain discipline among students.
Speaking in an interview on Starr FM, Aheto-Tsegah emphasized the importance of communication between parents and school authorities when disciplinary actions are taken. “Parents should always be informed about any acts of indiscipline involving their children and must be patient in listening to the decisions the school intends to make.
They should support the school’s actions for discipline to be effective,” he stated. He further advised teachers to adopt a fair approach when handling disciplinary cases to help parents understand the school’s decisions.
“Teachers, in turn, can guide children through the appropriate process, much like what lawyers recommend—listening to both sides to ensure a balanced approach to resolving issues.
This helps parents understand and appreciate the level of discipline being applied,” he explained. Addressing the tendency of some parents to oppose school decisions, Aheto-Tsegah warned against confrontations between parents and teachers.
“We want to avoid situations where parents confront teachers just because their child has misbehaved, only to take the child home and later disagree with the school’s decisions.
“It’s important for parents and schools to work together cooperatively to ensure that discipline is consistent, and our children are well-behaved,” he added.
His comments come in the wake of a violent student-community clash, which reportedly began when some students left the school without permission and engaged in confrontations with town residents, leading to casualties.
