Peugeot has promised to revive the legendary 208 GTi, maintaining its retro feel and honouring its hatch heritage.

When asked about the potential launch, the French carmaker’s new CEO said he’s only a few days into the job but is keen to acknowledge the brand’s roots.

Top boss Alain Favey said: “As you can imagine, being 10 days in the job, this is one I’ve been asking myself very much.

“I’m very, very eager to connect the Peugeot brand and what it stands for to its past, to its heritage, in every sense.

“So we will look back at what the heritage of the brand is, and we will see to what extent this can be adapted to the modern world.

“And there is nothing excluded in our review of this, and certainly not the GTi badge for sure.”

Favey didn’t confirm the new model was definitely going ahead but hinted that they might be bringing some classics into an electric era.

Peugeot’s hot hatch heritage suggests the next model could be a performance car rather than a family SUV and with a fully electric engine.

When the Peugeot 205 GTI was first revealed in 1984 it surged in popularity and immediately became one of the brands most famous models.

It was one of the notable small cars of the 80s with a dynamic 1.6 or 1.9-litre petrol engine inside a family vehicle.

Managing Director of Stellantis UK Eurig Druce however told Auto Express that any upcoming models would need far more than just a high-powered motor.

He said: “What we cannot do ever is to put a GTi badge on something that is a conventional car with a slightly bigger e-motor, for example.

“One of the big things about this future market is that almost every electric car can be a quick car.

“The beauty comes from being able to make a fast car and a really enjoyable, drivable car as well.”

It’s expected that the 208 GTi will have a similar look to the latest 3008 and 5008 SUVs and offer an adventurous look.

Pinned as a hot version of the Vauxhall Corsa Electric it will be a hatchback dripping with style and speed.

The stylish retro look of old motors is becoming increasingly popular with drivers.

With the Renault 5 E-Tech and Ford Capri offering a fully adapted taste of history, it’s clear there is a demand for classic comebacks.

Old fashioned-style Peugeots have particularly made their mark with a very iconic model was sold last year.

Mr Bean star Rowan Atkinson sold his classic Peugeot 205 in September last year and the 1989 make attracted a lot of attention.

The “Hot Hatch” has cloth bolsters, bright red velour carpets, and was expected to reach £20,000 in auction.
