Internet criticizes South Korea’s cancel culture for Kim Sae-ron’s demise

Following Kim Sae-ron’s tragic death, as the internet began recalling the public wrath and societal pressure faced by the actress after her 2022 DUI case, netizens started calling her a victim of Korea’s brutal cancel culture. Stating how she made a mistake that society never let her forget, people blamed the cancel culture for pushing her to the edge.
Although several Korean stars including BTS member Suga, and Squid Game alum Lee Jung-jae have faced multiple DUIs in the past, people highlighted how their cases were taken lightly and they were cleared of all charges with a fine. Thereon, Kim Sae-ron was found to be working at a cafe to pay the damages and make ends meet. However, due to the controversies surrounding her, Sae-ron had to change her name and constantly keep changing her workplace. Ultimately, despite trying to rebuild her life, as the K-drama star found it difficult to escape the harsh judgment of the public, netizens noted how it forced her to take the drastic step of committing suicide.
