South by Southwest, also known as SXSW, is in full swing from March 7 to March 15. Held today, Saturday, March 8, at 11:30 AM, people saw moderator Gina Pell talk to Sophie Trudeau for the panel In Conversation with Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, held by SheMedia Co-Lab. During this talk, Sophie let a little secret slip about what her marriage to the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, was like.
After Sophie and Justin separated in 2023, they’ve kept quiet about one another, until now.
Bell talked about the toll of being addicted to one’s work can have on someone’s health, saying, “And I think a lot of us can relate to that who are maybe workaholics. You know, maybe we’re not doing anything that’s too bad for our health, but work as bad out of your health.”
Sophie responded, “It is. Of course, I married one.” She laughed, also earning loud laughter from the audience.
While this is such a quick-witted, cheeky joke, it also has fans talking: did they split up due to Justin’s workaholic tendencies? Well, a couple years back, Nelson Wiseman, a political science professor at the University of Toronto, spoke to NPR, saying, “The separation may have been partially driven by an ultimatum from Sophie that Trudeau not contest the next election.” (When someone says they “will not contest the next election,” it means that they will not be running for office or challenging the current or potential candidates; so Wiseman believes Justin’s workaholic tendencies may have played a part in this separation.)
For those who don’t know, Sophie and Justin first met when she was a classmate of his younger brother Michel. They reconnected as adults in 2003, and married two years later.
They later welcomed three children named Xavier James, born on Oct. 18, 2007, Ella-Grace Margaret, born on Feb. 5, 2009, and Hadrien Gregoire, born on Feb. 28, 2014.
They announced their separation in Aug 2023.
