If ‘Solo Leveling’ Fans Hated Sung Jinwoo’s Reunion With His Mother, They’ll Hate [Spoiler] Even More

Spoiler Alert !!!
This article contains spoiler from the manhwa.

Solo Leveling isn’t all about flashy fights and kicka** scenes and episode 9 of Season 2 proved it. It was slammed by some diehard fanatics who were rather interested in action scenes. The emotional reunion between Jinwoo and his mother left a bitter taste in their mouths but this is just the beginning.

There is a devastatingly emotional scene from the manhwa which might put the fanatics on the edge. It is beautiful yet so poignant in the way Chugong wrote it, so much so that fans cannot wait for it to be animated. Yet, Jinwoo’s reunion with his mother highlights an era of fanaticism within fandoms.

Solo Leveling fans await yet another reunion scene

Solo Leveling isn’t all zippy zappy considering its action sequences and fights. It has moments of vulnerability and depth. The leveling up ties in with the character’s growth and self-discovery, which, much to everyone’s chagrin, has been called vanilla.

The zero-to-hero trope isn’t everyone’s jam and yet the series has gained cult popularity since its premiere. It only goes on to soar in every single way through its plot and well-written arcs. But what makes it noteworthy are these moments of emotional “weakness,” as some would call it.

The second season has everyone at a loss for words, mainly because of the well-animated fights. The Ice Bear as well as the duel against Baran is one such example that cemented A-1 Pictures as a brilliant animation studio. But it also dampened fans’ spirits regarding Jinwoo’s reunion with his mom.

Some even went so far as to shower the episode with dislikes. But what’s deeply saddening is that the fans fail to appreciate character depth and development. Others, however, cannot wait for Jinwoo’s father to make an appearance in the anime.

On r/sololeveling fans responded to Chapter-166. The manhwa panel shows Jinwoo hugging his father who is now a vessel for a ruler. Some even compared it to Naruto meeting his reanimated father. But this is nothing like it considering the different stakes altogether, but there is a problem nonetheless.

With the problematic and questionable fanatical culture seeping in fandoms, some fans were rather skeptical about the move. The moment is heartbreaking, yes, but it would only bring out disgust from haters. It shows that this is an era of anime fanatics and we cannot do anything but live with it.

This is the era of fanatics and we’re living in it

It is only natural to have differences in opinion, but it becomes a problem when it converts to fanaticism. Chugong’s series is no exception to that considering the recent episode and the amount of dislikes it got. Yes, it is an action-oriented series but some are too finicky about emotional scenes.

Often fans forget that the series is relatable because of the characters’ hardships. The main reason why people can relate to Jinwoo is because he fights his way to the top. His hardships tie in well with his father’s failure. It is only natural for him to be teary eyed during his reunion.

Besides that, he takes on the role of a breadwinner to sustain his mother who is in a comatose state. Stakes and emotions are interwoven in a story and any series cannot do without emotional depth. It is a shame some fanatics discredit character growth by looking down on this crucial aspect.

Solo Leveling anime is available for streaming on Crunchyroll. The manhwa is available for reading on Shueisha’s Manga Plus app.
