I Know Why ‘Sakamoto Days’ Feels So Bland Even With the Cool Fight Scenes

It’s certainly sad to admit, but it turns out the Sakamoto Days anime adaptation is skipping through quite a few chapters and just covering the main storyline with little to no innovation. As a manga reader myself, witnessing such cruelty firsthand is extremely heartbreaking and there are reasons why I must be saying this.

Now don’t get me wrong. I still believe that what Sakamoto Days’ anime is providing us is absolutely awesome at the end of the day. Surely there is stuff the studio could’ve improved on, but that alone wasn’t making it any bad until they caught me off guard with all these ‘skipped contents’.

The Sakamoto Days anime could at least faithfully adapt the manga, right?

On the surface, I don’t think any anime-only viewer will come across any major issue while watching the Sakamoto Days anime. I mean, there’s nothing much to complain about anyway, other than the fact they could, yes, improve on the animation a little bit. But that’s not even that big of a problem.

But for those who are already aware of the stuff that happened in the manga, be they manga readers or simply spoilers-lovers, they would be quite disappointed knowing all the good shit the anime just completely glossed over.

It’s okay if you’re trying to focus on the main plot alone, but isn’t the deal kind of unfair here? Because you’re also sacrificing the moments that could make the anime-only viewers more attached to the series?

Theory: the anime is gonna skip chapter 32 like they did with 2, 3 and 16

There were scenes in chapters 2, 3, and 16 of the manga, that, at a glance, may not seem relevant to the main plot, but they were filled with raw, emotionally interactive character moments. You can call them filler, but I think such moments are absolutely necessary to make viewers feel really connected to the cast, and get sad when they are sad and happy when they are happy.

I can only hope they will adapt the upcoming chapters properly, without skipping any content

With no such filler moments, it’s very hard to see the characters building their relationships with each other on a deeper level. And without it, the whole show might feel like just another typical Shonen with a bunch of bland characters.

The anime has, however, proved it though, that they are capable of orchestrating such wholesome character moments with scenes like – Shin having dinner with the Sakamoto family or Sakamoto and Boiled getting a scolding from Mrs. Sakamoto. But they were too only shown because it was necessary to progress the main plot. And I’m not asking for that!

What Studio TMS Entertainment truly needs to do now is shake off those ‘skipping contents’ allegations by actually not skipping anything anymore. Like, come on, this is not even a big ask! For the other manga readers who might be reading this article now, just imagine if the anime didn’t skip those backpack chapter and bus hijacking chapter, how infinitesimally better the adaptation could be now!

Sakamoto Days is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
