The Monkey D. family members in One Piece are a curious bunch. Garp is the Hero of the Marines, Dragon is the Supreme Commander of the Revolutionary Army, and Luffy is one of the Emperors of the Sea.
They couldn’t be any more different yet connected in One Piece. Even though their appearances look vastly distinct from each other, they’ve inherited some traits. The three of them have also impacted the storyline greatly and bear the Will of D.

So naturally, the One Piece fandom has to dig into this. It’s highly possible they are descendants of a very special bloodline and have assimilated so much that they seem like normal human beings. Their unnatural strength and unwavering will say otherwise, and the answer lies in the Skypiea Arc.
The Monkey D. family are Shandians and Kalgara is their ancestor
If you haven’t watched or read the Skypiea Arc, revisit One Piece and come back here. The arc might be long and seem disconnected from the overall storyline, but this is a huge misconception. It’s the most lore-heavy arc with a ton of foreshadowing.

Kalgara, the Great Warrior of Shandora, is a significant figure from One Piece history. He might not be as memorable as Sun God Nika or Joy Boy but his tattoos suggest a connection to Monkey D. Dragon, Luffy’s father.
His son-in-law, Seto, also looks strikingly like Luffy when he was young. Moreover, Garp often wears a dog mask. Who else wears such a canine hat? The Shandia chiefs. The Vice Admiral also fights like Kalgara.
Knowing Eiichiro Oda, these cannot be a coincidence. Fans, too, have noticed these similarities and presented this theory on Reddit.
MONKEY D. FAMILY IS SHANDIAN AND DESCENDANT OF KALGARA

The most convincing hint is in the present timeline where Luffy rings the Golden Bell, also known as the Light of Shandora. Wyper, a direct descendant of Kalgara, also said that only his family can ring it. So how exactly did Luffy manage that?
Coincidence or classic Oda foreshadowing?
With all of those similarities and how the foreshadowing operates, it’s too deliberate to be random. Even the cover for Volume 27 shows Luffy winking at us with Shandia wings. The boy is rarely drawn winking, so while it might be a stretch, it could also be a hint.

Luffy ringing the Golden Bell was also to complete Noland’s legacy and prove to the Saruyama Alliance that Shandora exists. If only a descendant of Kalgara can ring it, this is a glaring hint of his heritage. It’s not even subtle.
Another hint that isn’t as convincing is that Kalgara and Monkey D. Dragon shared the same Japanese voice actor, Hidekatsu Shibata. However, the anime does often reuse its cast due to how vast it is. It doesn’t mean Franky and Bon Clay, who were both voiced by Kazuki Yao, are related.
Perhaps we’ll never find out about Luffy’s heritage and why the Monkey D. family is the way they are. However, this theory is too compelling to even ignore. One Piece fans might be onto something here.
