How Harry Styles went from cute 1D star to ripped marathon-runner with gruelling Tyson Fury workouts and juice cleanses

SINCE it was revealed that Harry Styles ran the Tokyo marathon in a mere three hours and 24 minutes, he’s been the talk of the town.

Once a cute 16-year-old cast in five-piece boyband One Direction, he’s now a 31-year-old hunk with serious fitness credentials.

Watermelon Sugar singer Harry can run a marathon over an hour quicker than the average person, with the standard marathon time worldwide sitting at four hours and 29 minutes.

His love of health and fitness can be traced back to his One Direction days – but it’s only recently that he’s upped the ante on becoming an international hunk.

One Direction was formed on music competition series The X Factor in 2010 after each member was eliminated from the solo contest.

Harry’s bandmates included Louis Tomlinson, 33, Zayn Malik, 32, Niall Horan, 31, and the late Liam Payne, who died aged 31 in October last year.

They young lads, all from working class towns in England and Ireland, became one of the best-selling boybands of all time before calling time in 2016.

Harry was raised in Holmes Chapel in Cheshire, where he was the lead singer for local band White Eskimo as a teen.

He appeared on the seventh series of X Factor and quickly became a favourite among viewers for his cheeky personality and signature curly hair.

One Direction, which was often shortened to 1D, became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.

Harry released his eponymous debut solo record in 2017 and has since gone on to cement himself as a cultural icon.

He sold out a string of shows for his Love on Tour 2023 tour, including multiple nights at London’s famous Wembley Stadium.

But how does one man maintain enough stamina to perform elaborate concerts night after night to 90,000 fans at one time?

Through a series of gruelling (and sometimes bizarre) health, fitness and lifestyle regimes, of course.

Channelling his inner Tyson Fury

Harry joined a hardcore boxing gym in London to start pushing himself to the limit, The Sun revealed in March last year.

A source said: “Harry’s really got into boxing recently and became a regular at a tough boxing gym in central London.

“He has one-to-one sessions with the trainers there and has been really pushing himself on the bags.

The training he does has all been inspired by athletes you’ve seen in the ring, like Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua

“The gym is focused on helping people be the best boxers they can be.

“There’s no messing around.”

Gruelling workouts

Harry’s gruelling workout routines have been a hot topic of conversation in recent years – mainly because most normal folk struggle to make it through.

One of his former personal trainers, Thibo David, told Marie Claire that there were four key movements needed to develop “raw power and endurance” like Harry.

These were kettlebell swings, jumping lunges, tuck jumps and springs.

“By blending explosive movements like kettlebell swings, sprints and tuck jumps, this approach not only develops raw power and endurance but also supports long-term health and sustainability,” Thibo said.

Harry’s other former personal trainer, Brad Gould, can be credited for taking the singer’s sculpted shape to the next level.

The strength and conditioning coach, from Bournemouth, even accompanied the Brit Award-winner on the Australian leg of his 2023 tour to keep him on track.

Mr Meat-free

Harry hasn’t eaten meat in over eight years.

Instead, the singer follows a pescetarian diet, something which was inspired by the vegan food that some of his current band prepared on tour.

He told Vogue that his body “definitely feels better for it”.

Stripping off is very liberating, I feel so free

That’s because fish and shellfish are good sources of many vitamins and minerals, according to the NHS.

Oily fish (such as salmon and sardines) is also particularly high in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, which promote heart health.

When a fan threw a chicken nugget on stage at Harry in 2022 while he was performing at New York’s Madison Square Garden, he exclaimed to the crowd of 20,000: “I don’t eat meat!”

Six-day juice cleanse

Superstar Harry is also partial to a six-day juice cleanse.

He has been known to take on a liquid diet ahead of major photoshoots, including one for Vogue in 2020.

You can trim down quickly when following a juice diet because it involves cutting out sources of fat and protein, and significantly shaving down your calorie intake.

However, juice cleanses aren’t a long-term solution to weight loss.

Furthermore, the NHS recommends limiting fruit juice and smoothies to a maximum of one small glass (150ml) a day.

Official advice also details that you should drink juices with a meal, as they’re so high in sugar.

Getting naked

Harry doesn’t like to just strip his diet back to basics.

In his 2011 autobiography, he revealed: “I have great memories of being in the [X Factor] house, especially all of the times I went naked.

“Stripping off is very liberating, I feel so free.

“It’s always a spur-of-the-moment thing, but no-one seemed to mind.

“I’d become a lot more confident during my time in the show through being in front of so many people.

“My confidence came out in my nakedness.”
