“It’s the rematch of the century”: Invincible Episode 8 Will Be Hard to Watch for The Walking Dead Fans as Jeffrey Dean Morgan Returns

Every The Walking Dead fan should tune in next week for an epic rematch in Invincible. The ending of the latest season 3 episode revealed Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Conquest, the strongest Viltrumite who hopes to conquer Earth and turn it into a Viltrum colony. Opposite him is Invincible himself, Mark Grayson, voiced by Steven Yeun.

Fans remember the harrowing entry of Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan in The Walking Dead and the scene’s continuation in season 7, where he bludgeons Yeun’s Glenn to death. The two will be coming together again in the next episode and season 3 finale of Invincible, and it seems to be a better playing field than last time.

It is not every day the Robert Kirkman universe gets an unexpected crossover. The latest episode of Invincible saw Mark Grayson fight against a barrage of Evil Marks from the multiverse, headed by Sterling K. Brown’s Angstrom Levy. After fighting and trying to save the world from destruction, Mark is trying his best to rebuild when a bigger baddie appears.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Conquest is one of the most powerful Viltrumites in Kirkman’s comics. He is the big bad, the final boss of sorts, and one of the most beloved antagonists in the Invincible universe. He is almost like the Negan of this universe, which is interesting since Kirkman also wrote The Walking Dead.

A Negan vs Glenn rematch is about to happen again next week in the season 3 finale of Invincible as Steven Yeun’s Mark Grayson and Dean Morgan’s Conquest finally clash. The villain’s appearance has been teased for over two years now and it is finally happening.

The last time Yeun and Morgan clashed, the latter bashed the former’s head in with a baseball bat and ended the actor’s tenure in The Walking Dead. However, this time, Yeun is not kneeled down with his hands tied behind his back and it seems to be more of a level playing field.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan was reportedly considered for Conquest from the beginning

Fans have been waiting for Conquest’s arrival since Invincible began and his final entrance was so worth the wait. His arrival has been teased for the past two years since season 2, but Robert Kirkman has reportedly been planning the casting of Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s since the show debuted.

The makers misdirected the fans with theories of Breaking Bad’s Jonathan Banks playing the role but were almost spoiled when Jeffrey Dean Morgan let it slip that he was reading the comics. However, his arrival was definitely a surprise for fans who have seen him play another classic Robert Kirkman villain.

Kirkman mentioned the process of getting Morgan on board and how long he planned the appearance. He said to EW,

[I’ve been thinking of Jeffrey Dean Morgan] probably since the beginning of the show’s existence…. Conquest needs a lot of nuance. There’s a tremendous amount of personality there, even though he is this giant, powerful brute that’s just wrecking things. And I knew Jeffrey could bring that.

Dean Morgan too mentioned that he was thrilled to be a part of it and quipped that he loved giving Steven Yeun ‘a chance at redemption’.

Invincible is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
