Abena Moet has stirred controversy with her bold claim that people don’t genuinely care about celebrities, arguing that public attention is fleeting.
Speaking on The Toast show on GHOne, she made it clear that fame is temporary and depends heavily on visibility.
“Time and time again, we think we’re too important, but the truth is, people don’t really care about us,” she stated. “If people cared, why would they go under a celebrity’s post just to say, ‘I wish you guys break up’?”
Her point sparked a heated discussion among the panel, with Achaawa Sackey pushing back against the generalization. However, Moet stood firm on her stance, citing Moesha Boduong as an example.
“Moesha was one of the biggest celebrities at a point, but ask yourself, when was the last time anybody asked about her?” she questioned. “Unless you’re Beyoncé and Jay-Z, nobody really remembers you once you’re out of sight.”
She further explained that social media algorithms force certain content into people’s faces, making them react momentarily, but the moment a celebrity disappears from public view, it becomes an afterthought.
“New celebrities come up every day,” she added. “People move on. That’s just how it is.”
