President Mahama calls for lasting peace in Bawku

President John Dramani Mahama has made a heartfelt appeal to residents of Bawku and its surrounding areas to put an end to the long-standing conflict that has troubled the region for years.

Addressing the nation at Ghana’s 68th Independence Day parade at the Jubilee House on Thursday, March 6, 2025, President Mahama stressed that the time for peace in Bawku is now, urging all factions to work toward reconciliation.

He lamented the devastating impact of the conflict on the younger generation, who, he said, deserve to grow up in a peaceful and stable environment, rather than one defined by violence and destruction.

“To the people of Bawku and other affected areas, it is time for lasting peace to prevail. Our children deserve to inherit a peaceful land where their minds are nurtured, not where their nightmares are relived,” he stated.

He further emphasised the need for communities to build positive memories in schools, marketplaces, and homes, ensuring that young people can grow up in an atmosphere of hope rather than fear.

“They deserve to inherit a land where our markets flourish with trade, not tension and conflict. They deserve to inherit schools that echo with learning, not sorrow,” he added.

The President called on all parties involved to move beyond division and distrust and embrace reconciliation, stating, “Let us not be swayed by division, distrust, and the burdens of the past. Let us give renewal of friendship a chance; let us give peace a chance. This is not an invitation to simply forget the past—far from it. It is an invitation to rise above it.”

Bawku has, for years, been marred by ethnic and chieftaincy-related violence, leading to loss of lives and displacement of many residents. Successive governments have made various attempts to resolve the crisis, but tensions have often reignited.

President Mahama’s renewed call for peace comes as the nation commemorates 68 years of independence, reflecting on its progress and the need for unity in building a prosperous future for all Ghanaians.
