Awkward moment Hibs cup final hero stuns Rangers hero Andy Halliday with brutal Sunshine on Leith comeback after derby

THE Proclaimers’ emotive Hibees anthem Sunshine on Leith has rarely been belted out louder than it was after the derby win on Sunday.

Footage of the Easter Road men singing the spine-chilling anthem in front of their fans has gone viral in the wake of the match.

But one former Hibs cup final hero couldn’t resist a brutal comeback when former Hearts, Rangers and current Motherwell man Andy Halliday, working for Sky Sports on the day, said it was the FIRST time he had heard the song sung.

Speaking on the latest Open Goal podcast, Motherwell star Halliday – who masterminded a famous win over Rangers this weekend – innocently mentioned it was the first time he had ever heard the song sung.

Quick as a flash, guest Dylan McGouch replied: “That’s right, the cup final, yous were in the dressing room.”

That, of course, is a reference to the 2016 Scottish Cup final between Hibs and Rangers, when the Easter Road men ended more than a century of hurt in the competition with current boss David Gray heading the winner.

Halliday too scored that day even if his goal hasn’t become as famous as that of Gray.

And amid the chaos that ensued on the pitch afterwards, with Hibs fans invading the pitch amid ugly scenes as they fought with Gers fans with even players and staff getting caught up in he violence.

Rangers stars were removed to the dressing room as the chaos unfolded along with Hibs players – with the Easter Road men re-emerging to pick up the trophy and another famous rendition of the Proclaimers song.

Halliday took it all in good heart, saying: “It was really good. Obviously David Gray took all the players and the staff on the pitch.”

Halliday, meanwhile, has revealed that he wouldn’t ANSWER the phone if Udinese phoned him to discuss a transfer this summer.

He said: “I told Lennon if I was him and Udinese phoned I wouldn’t answer!

“That’s a little bit tongue-in-cheek but he’s better than that — the sky’s the limit for him, really.

“Motherwell are very lucky to have Lennon and he’s really lucky to have them.

“It’s been a club that’s given him a platform at such a young age. It’s allowed him to develop, allowed him to make mistakes, and let him grow and become the player he is just now.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt Lennon’s going to continue to grow, and then outgrow Motherwell.

“You see the kind of clubs that he has been linked with over the last couple of months.”
