Game of Thrones has had a couple of recasts done throughout its run, and one of the most noticeable was the change of Daario Naharis actor. The part was originally played by Ed Skrein in the third season, but in the next installment, fans welcomed a new face.

It was said that conflict of schedule was the culprit behind the issue since the actor was set to star as the younger version of Jason Statham’s character in The Transporter Refueled. However, he clarified that it went beyond this reason.
The real reason why Ed Skrein did not return in Game of Thrones
Daario Naharis played an important role in Daenerys Targaryen’s campaign, serving as her advisor and enforcer, and later her lover. Ed Skrein delivered his role exceptionally, so it left fans wondering why he did not come back in Season 4. It was Dutch actor Michiel Huisman who took over for the remainder of the series.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Skrein clarified that his departure from the show due to another project was only a press statement. The real reason was more political.
My plan was to stay with Game of Thrones for the long haul. That was always my plan. I would have loved to. It was a wonderful experience, but politics led to us parting ways.
He did not elaborate on what political disagreements they had on the set, but the actor only remarked that he did not dwell too much on his exit. He accepted that some things would not go his way and that the next best thing he could do is to keep moving on.
In another conversation with Too Fab, he insisted that he did not walk away from the show. Still, he refused to reveal the nitty-gritty details of why he no longer returned. “This is a complicated industry and there’s always politics involved,” the 41-year-old actor noted.
Huisman’s Daario had a more prominent role in the show. He finally swore fealty to Daenerys and even shared romantic scenes with her. Sadly, they didn’t last together as the Mother of Dragons had more important tasks to do. She left for Westeros with her army, leaving her lover in Meereen, and never to be seen again.
Ed Skrein on following the legacy of Jason Statham

As mentioned, Skrein had no regrets about leaving Game of Thrones for The Transporter Refueled. The actor did not feel pressured at all to take the role that made Jason Statham iconic. He said that the only daunting part was to make sure he created a work that he was proud of.
The film, unfortunately, was a critical flop. Although many praised Skrein for his performance, the storyline did not impress the viewers. However, he went on to star in Marvel’s Deadpool the following year, gaining more recognition as Ajax than he did as Daario.
Game of Thrones is currently available to watch on Max.
