In the aftermath of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) crushing defeat in the 2024 elections, a fact-finding committee within the party has identified several local issues and internal divisions as key factors that worked against the party’s prospects in many constituencies.
According to the findings, certain constituencies experienced significant tension, often sparked by local disputes that undermined the party’s efforts.
In Asante Akim Central, for instance, party officers alleged that the incumbent MP had promised not to contest in the 2024 primaries but later went back on his word.
This created a divide within the constituency party, with some supporters refusing to accept the MP’s decision to run again.
Although the MP’s supporters refuted these allegations, the damage was done, and it negatively impacted both the parliamentary candidate and the party’s standing in the area.
“When the MP broke his promise not to contest again, it caused serious division in the constituency party.
The information spread quickly and caused havoc for the party’s chances,” a local party officer shared.
In Adansi Asokwa, another issue emerged concerning the MP’s handling of previous constituency primaries.
Allegations of album manipulation and disenfranchisement of voters had caused discontent among party members.
Although the MP had once helped develop the constituency, including electrifying local communities during the Kufuor era, his personality had become a divisive factor.
“The MP became the center of confusion in the constituency.
His past actions in manipulating primaries led to cracks in the party, which ultimately hurt our chances,” one party officer explained.
