Kevin Costner has worked alongside Gene Hackman in films like No Way Out and Wyatt Earp. He paid tribute to the late actor in an Instagram post and shared a clip from a past interview where he revealed an interaction that left a lasting impression on Costner.

He looked at me and said, ‘Hey, I went through a divorce, I’ve been doing a lot of questionable movies lately, and when I saw you fighting for what you wanted today, it reminded me of how I used to feel about acting. It was good what you did.’ And he just got in his car and drove off.

This was Hackman’s vulnerable and generous way of praising Costner because prior to this interaction, the latter had butted heads with the director over a scene. The Yellowstone star thought that Hackman would express disapproval, but the words of his idol only validated him and reignited his love for the craft.

Gene Hackman’s death at the age of 95 has left a void in Hollywood, but we will always remember him as one of the greatest actors of his generation. He was a symbol of excellence, an idol to the best artists that came after him, and a quiet mentor.

The news of his passing hit the tabloids on February 26, 2025. As per reports from BBC, the actor and his wife Betsy Arakawa and one of their dogs were found dead in their New Mexico home, and the authorities believe the circumstances are “suspicious enough” to call for an investigation.

There were no signs of injury, but they found a portable heater near Arakawa’s body and some pills that were scattered on the bathroom countertop. Hackman’s daughter has stated that he was in a “very good physical condition” despite being in his mid-90s. So, it seems like the exact reason for his demise will be revealed in the coming days, and until then, we can only remember the actor’s legacy and keep him alive in spirit.
