U.S. Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-CA) met with key forestry leaders to discuss the allocation of $75 million in federal funding for shaded fuel breaks, with $70 million directed specifically to California.
The funding, secured through last year’s disaster relief legislation, will be distributed through the U.S. Forest Service’s Region 5, which covers California and the Pacific Southwest. Congressman LaMalfa met with Secretary Homer Rollins, U.S. Forest Service Chief Randy Moore, and Mark Emmerson of Sierra Pacific Industries to discuss how the funds will be utilized to protect communities from devastating wildfires.
“Shaded fuel breaks—clearing out overgrown vegetation and reducing ground fuels—are a proven way to slow wildfires and give firefighters a better shot at containment,” LaMalfa stated. “This funding will get these projects moving across Northern California, helping protect our forests, infrastructure, and the areas most at risk from fast-moving wildfires.”
Shaded fuel breaks involve selective thinning of trees and vegetation to reduce fire intensity while maintaining forest health. These projects play a crucial role in fire mitigation efforts, especially in fire-prone areas like Northern California.
