The Last of Us Season 2 Trailer: HBO Show Has Seemingly Changed Ellie’s Turning Point Moment From the Game – Theory

For a long while, video game adaptations were mostly relegated to studio-driven Shlock, whether it’s Assassin’s Creed or Prince of Persia. Thankfully, things have finally changed for the better in recent years, and HBO’s The Last of Us was a shining example of a video game adaptation done right, which makes sense as Neil Druckmann served as a co-creator of the series.

With The Last of Us Season 2 inching toward its release, which is set to deal with one of the most impactful narratives from the AAA space, it’s pretty evident that certain storylines, similar to season 1, will be explored more. One character that could play a major role in Ellie and Joel’s journey is Eugene, who is set to have a much bigger role in contrast to the game.

Eugene’s potential death could push Ellie toward the brink of truth

While we never witness Eugene firsthand in Part 2, Neil Druckmann confirmed that his character, played by Joe Pantoliano, will be expanded in the series, similar to that of Bill from season 1. Moreover, the teaser makes it seem like Joel will be the one to off him in the adaptation, very much unlike the game version, which reveals that he died from a stroke.

Although this might be a deliberate attempt from the showrunners to mislead viewers, if true, this could play a vital role in Ellie’s exploration of the truth. Given Eugene’s past as a firefly who ditched his family to save the world, if he does indeed die from an infection, his death could escalate Ellie’s pursuit of the truth, as she is already dealing with survivor’s guilt,

Not only might it allow showrunners to explore Eugene’s bond with Ellie and Joel, but this could also potentially serve as an equivalent of the Jackson runaways from the game, leading to the heart-shattering “You Swore” scene.

We might’ve seen the last of The Last of US with part II

Following HBO’s Head of Drama Francesca Orsi’s comments toward four potential seasons for the adaptation, it made many certain that the fourth season might revolve around a potential third game. Unfortunately, as of now, there are no plans for a threequel in sight. Speaking with Variety, Naughty Dog head Druckmann confessed (via Variety):

I was waiting for this question. I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.”

Even though it does make sense from a narrative standpoint, given how impeccable Part II was, it’d be a shame if it is the last of the acclaimed Naughty Dog IP, at least until a PS6 remastered hits the shelves.

The Last of Us season 2 will premiere on Max on April 13, 2025.
