Popular discount store announces shock closure as doors to shut THIS month leaving customers ‘gutted’

A POPULAR discount store has announced their shock closure with doors set to shut this MONTH.

One of Cork City’s two Dealz stores in the city centre is closing soon, leaving many shoppers disappointed.

Dealz on Merchant’s Quay will shut its doors for good on March 19.

The move will leave just three locations remaining open in the region; Grand Parade, Douglas and Blackpool.

Inside photos of the store show that most items have already been cleared as the closure date approaches.

Locals often visited the shop for affordable sweets, and it also featured one of the city’s Deposit Return Machines.

For those who used this machine, another Deposit Return Machine can be found close by at Dunnes Stores in Merchant’s Quay.

Before the store closes on March 19, the following are its opening hours, although these may be adjusted for St Patrick’s Day:

  • Monday: 08:00 – 19:00
  • Tuesday: 08:00 – 19:00
  • Wednesday: 08:00 – 19:00
  • Thursday: 08:00 – 19:20
  • Friday: 08:00 – 19:20
  • Saturday: 08:00 – 19:20
  • Sunday: 12:00 – 18:15

People have taken to social media to share their disappointment with the news.

One person wrote: “It is very handy to get to from Merchant’s, pity it’s closing.”

Another said: “I do be in here every other day, I’m gutted.”

However, in more positive news, Lidl on Cornmarket Street in Cork city will reopen just a day after Dealz’s closure.

After months of renovations, the revamped store will open to the public on March 20.

ANOTHER CLOSURE

Meanwhile, locals in Cork have also been left devastated after a much-loved business announced they are set to close their doors.

The Hunter’s Rest in Cork began the month of March by sharing their shock closure with fans.

In a post on social media, the company, located on the Main Street in Mitchelstown, shared the devastating news after years in business.

The owner of the business, Robert Mullally, shared that “after many years of a career in hospitality”, he is set to retire.

As a result, the popular pub will close on April 30, 2025.

‘HAPPY MEMORIES’

In the heartfelt post on Facebook, he wrote: “After many years of a career in hospitality I am today announcing my decision to retire.

“To every customer who bought a dinner, a pint or even a bar of chocolate from me I sincerely thank you.

“To the staff who have worked with me both at present and in the past, my heartfelt thanks. I sincerely wish you the very best for now and in your future careers.”

‘HEARTFELT THANKS’

He thanked those he worked with, adding: “To the local and regional food, beverages and drink suppliers who have worked alongside me, some of you for many years, it has been a fantastic business to business experience and my pleasure to work with, cook and showcase your products.

“To all other service providers and professions, a sincere and heartfelt thanks”.
