During a conversation with Javed Akhtar, Khan shared his thought process on what drives his decision to sign a film. He revealed the three main factors that influence his choices—each grounded in his extensive experience in the film industry.
Khan begins by emphasizing the importance of the story, script, and screenplay. He says, “The story has to be something that I like, something that speaks to me.” For him, the narrative is the foundation of the film. If the story doesn’t resonate with him, no matter how talented the director or production team, he won’t consider the project.
Next, Khan speaks about the director. He notes, “The director has to be someone whose work I believe in, someone who has the capability to translate the story into something special.” Khan believes that a great director can elevate a film and make a significant difference in how the story is brought to life.
But it’s not just the script or the director that matter to Khan—he places great importance on the producer as well. He shares, “If the producer is weak, no matter how good the film is, it will not get the right release or promotion.” His early career taught him that even the best films can falter if the producer isn’t strong enough to back them.
Khan also adds, “I don’t see success, I see the ability of the person. Success is often determined by many factors. It’s not only the script; the director has to be good, and the producer must be strong too.”
