During an interview, Witwer reflected on his run as the now-iconic villain. In the process, Witwer also talked about his dynamic with Obi-Wan Kenobi, with the actor highlighting a fatal error the Jedi Knight made during Rebels season 3. Here is what Witwer had to say about Maul and Kenobi’s fight that changed the galaxy far, far away.

Darth Maul was first introduced in 1999’s The Phantom Menace and quickly became popular with the Star Wars fanbase. The character’s story was expanded through The Clone Wars and Rebels animated shows, with actor Sam Witwer voicing Maul.

In the third season of the latter series, Maul meets his eternal rival, Obi-Wan Kenobi, for a fated duel before the former reaches his demise. In an interview with Collider, the Maul actor discussed his fight with the Jedi and highlighted a major error the latter made.

He goes into the Ewan McGregor pose, almost not having learned a lesson, and he gives it a moment, takes a breath, and then goes into the Alec Guinness pose.

Witwer made the above statement, explaining that the fight scene could have easily led to Kenobi being defeated had he stuck to his initial fighting stance, which symbolized his reluctance to grow as a person.

The actor explained that the switching of stances symbolizes Kenobi letting go of his desire to fight and instead following in his master’s footsteps by emulating his stance. As a result, the character comes closer to his original trilogy iteration, marking his transformation from an apprentice to a master.

Eventually, the fight leads to Maul and Kenobi discussing the “Chosen One” before the former accepts his defeat and meets his demise. As a result, the third season concluded Maul’s overall storyline and marked the end of Witwer’s tenure as the character for the time being.

In the same interview, Witwer recalled his experience with the character and bidding farewell to Maul during the third season.

The funny thing is, the day after we performed Maul dying, and I had my emotional feelings about that, the very next day I was recording Maul for Battlefront II.

Witwer made the above statement, explaining that the characters are far too iconic to be killed off definitively.

Furthermore, Witwer added that the whole point of a story like Star Wars is to make memorable characters, imploring the audience to revisit it. Witwer would later reprise the role of Maul for the revival of The Clone Wars animated series. He also appeared as Rodian in The Book of Boba Fett.

Star Wars: Rebels and other Star Wars shows are streaming on Disney+.
