However, it seems the prolific writer is losing his touch, as fan reaction to the recently released season two of 1923 says. From creative choices to narration, fans believe it is high time that the Yellowstone creator turns back to his roots before things go way south.

Spoiler Alert !!!
Potential Spoilers for 1923 Season 2

Fans believe 1923 season 2 CGI is too cartoonish for a serious show like the Yellowstone prequel

The Yellowstone prequel, 1923, is based on the period of several hardships faced by the American people due to Prohibition, drought, the Great Depression, and more. A serious and gritty Western drama that draws the audience into the brutal and unforgiving world of the early 1920s, fans have found issues with the CGI in the show.

From the wolf attack on Elizabeth to the mountain lion encounter, the scenes appear to be distracting with their low-quality and cartoonish CGI. Despite these scenes intended to create tension and showcase hardship, the bad use of graphics and their degraded quality takes away all the sense of terror or emotions from the scenes, leaving the audience naturally detached and distanced from the narration.

Instead of relying on CGI, despite knowing how the result will look, Taylor Sheridan should have rather taken the practical route. Given how his hallmark since the very start has been authenticity, these poorly executed CGI-laced scenes not only diminish his storytelling ability but also greatly take away the realism and immersive experiences that fans have loved him for since the start.

Moreover, 1923 should not feel like a children’s fantasy film; instead, it should be raw and deeply immersive. And the only way to do it is if Sheridan ditches the cartoonish CGI and goes back to his OG, gripping storytelling.

Taylor Sheridan needs to go back to his OG roots

Taylor Sheridan is a seasoned storyteller who has time and again proven his ability to craft compelling narratives with strong dialogue delivery, realistic performances, and well-planned scenes. Usually intense and gritty, his work is known to be more grounded compared to that of his peers.

Given the miserably unconvincing CGI wolf attack and other CGI scenes in 1923 season 2, it is high time that Sheridan should turn towards his roots of more realistic storytelling. The same scenes could have been shot with clever camera work or could have featured the aftermath of the wolf attack instead of featuring a botched up job, which would have made the scene more dramatic instead of alienating viewers with their fakeness.

As he expands the world of Yellowstone or other works in different genres, Taylor Sheridan must take fans’ feedback to heart. Given his potential to create something everlasting, the director-actor-writer better bring back his character-driven, drama-intense storytelling if he wants to remain in the game in the long term.

1923 is available to be streamed on Paramount+.
