We Don’t Get Nearly Enough Interactions Between Jinshi and Gaoshun in ‘The Apothecary Diaries’

The Emperor of Li’s attendant is one of the most normal yet interesting characters. Gaoshun was almost always in the middle of Maomao and Jinshi’s antics when he temporarily became his attendant. In The Apothecary Diaries, he’s incredibly paternal towards Jinshi and cares immensely for him.

Considering his wife, Taomei, was Jinshi’s wet nurse, Gaoshun naturally had a huge role in raising him. Their dynamic continues in the present timeline of The Apothecary Diaries, in which he’s also somewhat of a bodyguard to him. However, he’s also not afraid to reprimand him.

Despite his paternal nature, Gaoshun often joins Maomao in teasing Jinshi and egging him on. He also has to face the brunt of their romantic dalliance. He might have the hot scoop on most of their moments.

However, there’s a noticeable reduction in their interactions after he was reinstated as the Emperor’s attendant. The Apothecary Diaries now rarely shows them together, which fans find incredibly devastating and leaves us wanting more.

Jinshi and Gaoshun are one of the more wholesome dynamics in The Apothecary Diaries

Gaoshun’s calm, intelligent, and stoic nature is valuable in the world of The Apothecary Diaries. He’s diligent but has a soft side to him when it comes to cats. Jinshi trusts him and leans on his advice very often.

Unfortunately for the attendant, he also gets tired of Jinshi and Maomao’s antics, often making exasperated expressions. He somewhat mirrors how the audience feels when they see them dance around their feelings. Gaoshun only tolerates it because of his fondness for them.

However, ever since he’s gone back to being the Emperor’s attendant, we rarely see him interact with Jinshi. It’s at least not in a personal context and mostly business. He’s one of the best side characters and he doesn’t have nearly enough screen time.

It’s not often that fans ask for more exchanges between Jinshi and someone else, mostly wanting to see his development with Maomao.

Jinshi’s character and dynamic with others deserve more exploration. We have barely seen enough of him and the Emperor, but Gaoshun deserves more screen time, too.

Jinshi is also equally as interesting as Maomao in terms of being the main lead. As the deuteragonist of The Apothecary Diaries and a character of higher status, we see a different side of the political landscape. Gaoshun too contributes to this.

Jinshi and Gaoshun are a unique take on the father-son relationship

Jinshi’s heritage is complicated and makes him a pawn in the political world. Gaoshun is the most stable parental figure he’s had in his life, someone who doesn’t use him as a tool or expect him to be something he doesn’t want to be.

Gaoshun also doesn’t beat around the bush with him. He lets Jinshi know when he’s made a mistake or isn’t doing his job. It’s clear the boy leans on him for assistance and support, as most parents should offer their child.

The Apothecary Diaries fans are right; Gaoshun deserves a medal for dealing with Jinshi’s shenanigans. It doesn’t look easy but perhaps he finds it entertaining. Still, the attendant is incredibly loyal and wouldn’t exchange it for anything. We need more of their dynamic in the series.
