“Sorriest ninja of all time”: Masashi Kishimoto Had No Reason to Do Tsunade’s Brother and Hashirama’s Grandson So Dirty

It is no surprise that Masashi Kishimoto wasted some of the fabulous characters in Naruto. Be it Tenten or Rock Lee, the series has an array of side characters that deserved better. Either they were majorly sidelined or overshadowed by the main cast, but nothing justifies this character’s treatment.

In all seriousness, Masashi Kishimoto did this character dirty in more ways than one. Fans even went so far to troll that one scene which reduced the tragedy into pure comedy. But this isn’t the first time the series did a major disservice to its characters.

Naruto character’s tragedy reduced to comedy

Tragedy takes the center stage when it comes to characters and plot development in Naruto. From Sasuke to Naruto, characters are surrounded by doom altogether, which ultimately shapes the course of their path. With the Uchiha, it manifests into villainy but with the hero, it’s the opposite.

From wars to massacres, the series unpacks grief and trauma brilliantly. It is this trait that sets it apart from other shonen contemporaries. The layers and complexities of pain, loneliness, and isolation are something that Kishimoto does exceptionally well.

This is especially true for Tsunade who is, by far, one of the strongest ninjas in the series. She is also a well-written female character compared to others, which is evident in her life experience. The fact that she is a member of the Senju Clan isn’t the only marker of her identity as a ninja.

Love and loss are something so gut-wrenching that it breaks the character in several ways. We all saw what it did to Obito but with Tsunade, it was wretched, especially since she witnessed the deaths firsthand. While Dan’s death remains tragic, Hashirama’s grandson was reduced to a butt of jokes.

In particular, the paper bomb scene had Instagram users respond something like this:

Truly, the scene looks straight out of a Spongebob episode and had most users in splits. It is sad how the animators played it out. What was supposed to be one of the most gut-wrenching scenes was reduced to a mere joke. But this is just one of the instances where the mangaka failed his characters.

Masashi Kishimoto failed his characters immensely

From underutilizing to overshadowing, Masashi Kishimoto has squandered his manga’s potential. This is a recurrent debate but it still doesn’t make sense considering their wasted abilities. Rock Lee and Tenten are some of the biggest examples of the characters who were treated unfairly.

Lee’s taijutsu prowess isn’t just commendable but it is top-tier. He proved that you do not need to be an Uchiha, a Hyuga or Uzumaki to be cool. Let’s face it, he was ridiculed by his peers. But he shut them up for good, especially in his fight against Gaara. The weight dropping scene said it all.

Tenten remains one of the wasted characters in Masashi Kishimoto's series.

Tenten, on the other hand, has always had a flair for Bukijutsu. It is a shame indeed that she lost miserably in her fight against Temari. Most fans remember her for that but no one discusses her caliber. She wielded the Bashosen against Kakuzu, which is something we all need to praise her for.

Other than that, her penchant for Fuinjutsu just shows how skilled of a shinobi she truly is. But it all boils down to wasted opportunities, potential, and caricaturing some of the important characters. To sum it up, Nawaki, Tenten and Lee deserved better.

Naruto is available for streaming on Crunchyroll. The manga is available for reading on Shueisha’s Manga Plus app.
