Comedian Bill Maher believes that cancel culture is still rampant in Hollywood following the Oscars night. A more shocking take on the event, he said that the controversy surrounding Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón played a part in helping Anora take home the awards.

Maher supports Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez and reveals that the film has everything it takes to sweep the Oscars. Unfortunately, out of its twelve nominations, it only bagged Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña and Best Original Song for El Mal.
Bill Maher speaks up on Oscars’ snubbing Emilia Pérez due to cancel culture
Bill Maher spoke with David Sedaris on Real Time with Bill Maher (via Deadline) to discuss the recently concluded Oscars, to which he made a striking comment about Best Picture contenders Anora and Emilia Pérez.
There are people who say cancel culture isn’t a real thing and I would say to them, ‘It just happened at the Oscars.’ You may not think it happened but the movie that was going to win it all was Emilia Pérez.
The comedian remarked that Hollywood was so excited to have its first-ever transperson win a Best Actress award at the Oscars, but after the controversial tweets of Karla Sofía Gascón, suddenly, she was out of the game. Fans would remember a bunch of old tweets from the actressthat resurfaced on social media and were perceived to be insensitive and racist. The posts ranged from the death of George Floyd to Islam in Spain.

Maher also noted that Emilia Pérez was destined to dominate the Oscars as it was the front-runner from the beginning, with Gascón so close to getting her award, but when the issue exploded, suddenly it was “good news for Anora.” He said cancel culture remains prevalent in the industry, although it is only a little more subtle.
Gascón has issued an apology, but this was seemingly not enough to repair the damage her past social media entries have caused. Maher believed the actress was only being honest in her tweets, but the “woke community” allegedly took her posts way too far.
At the 97th Academy Awards, Anora earned six nominations and surprisingly took home five wins, including Best Picture, Best Director for Sean Baker, Best Actress for Mikey Madison, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing.
Karla Sofía Gascón reveals why she refused to renounce her Best Actress nomination

Despite the controversy, Gascón still attended the Oscars. She previously said in an interview with CNN en Español that she would not give up her accolade because it is proof of her hard work. “I cannot renounce a nomination because what I have done is a job and what is being valued is my acting work,” she noted.
Furthermore, the actress insisted that she was not racist and that she did not commit a crime for her to renounce her nomination.
