Joy Behar Shares If She Wants to Leave ‘The View’ and Addresses Retirement Plans: ‘Eventually’

The View host Joy Behar shared her most memorable time on the daytime talk show, prompting the conversation of when she plans to retire and if she’s thinking of leaving the program soon.

Joy, 82, stopped by the “Behind the Table” podcast, hosted by The View executive producer, Brian Teta, on Friday, March 7, and took a trip down memory lane. During their conversation, the comedian applauded the moment her cohost, Whoopi Goldberg, walked off of an interview with Fox News host Bill O’Reilly in 2010.

“It’s my greatest moment on the show,” Joy gushed to Brian, 48. “And when I leave this show, I want you to include that in my package.”

Briam immediately noted that he wanted to “clarify” Joy’s statement about her future exit, leading her to reply, “When I do. Everybody leaves eventually. Even you will leave eventually.”

Joy also confirmed she was not planning on departing the show anytime soon.

Last month, fans were curious about the TV personality’s whereabouts when she was missing from consecutive episodes of The View. Although she was on the panel during the February 3 episode, leading Star Jones to fill her seat. Three days later, Whoopi, 69, addressed Joy’s absence.

“Joy is not here. We wish her a happy opening night. It’s tonight,” the Sister Act star said during the February 6 episode.

Later that day, Joy hit the stage for the Off-Broadway play My First Ex-Husband. Joy also created the project.

“So, I’ve always been fascinated by why people get married and why people get divorced. This is an interesting subject for me. I’m divorced myself, so I have a little bit of expertise in the area,” Joy said in an Instagram video at the time, referencing her 17-year marriage with ex-husband Joseph Behar. “I love to go to yard sales, and the best yard sales are always when the people are divorced because they will just give you everything [laughs]. ‘Take it. I don’t want it. I don’t want to have anything to do with that piece of furniture.’”

Joy Behar on If She Wants to Leave The View and Retirement Plans

Aside from her theatrical career, Joy has been a cohost on The View since its 1997 debut. She took a two-year break after her 2013 exit and has since starred in the series since her 2015 return.

Joy’s contract was up in 2013 and news broke that March that she would not return to the show.

“You reach a point where you say, ‘Do I want to keep doing this?’,” Behar told Deadline at the time. “There are other things on my plate I want to do – I’ve been writing a play, I’ve been neglecting my stand-up.”

That said, Joy later claimed to have not been asked back and her contract wasn’t renewed.

“Somebody wanted me gone. It was not 100 percent my choice,” Joey shared with People. “When they told me they weren’t renewing, I said, ‘Good, I’m out of here. I didn’t like the way the show was going at that time.”

Jenny McCarthy replaced Behar the following year for one season.
