Jessica Simpson’s New Song ‘Leave’ Hints at Experience With a Cheating Ex

Jessica Simpson left little to the imagination in her new song, “Leave,” seemingly implying that an ex cheated on her.

The track is part of her Nashville Canyon, Pt. 1 EP and released on Friday, March 7.

“What we had was magic / Now you made it tragic / Giving her what you gave to me / Now the well that you drank from’s empty,” the lyrics read.

The song continues, “Did you do to her what you did to me? / Was she on her knees? / Oh, she’s everything but me.”

Seemingly eliminating any doubt as to what she’s talking about, Simpson then sings about “unholy matrimony.”

All the Signs Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson Were Headed for a Divorce

“Did you do to her what you did to me? / Was she on her knees? / Oh, she’s everything but me,” she sings. “Oh, I, I’d rather die / Than let you be inside me with her on your mind.”

The song comes weeks after Simpson, 44, confirmed her split from husband Eric Johnson. The estranged pair began dating in 2010 while Johnson, 45, was married to his first wife, Keri D’Angelo. They married in 2014 and are now separated.

The “Irresistible” singer and former San Francisco 49ers tight end first became subject to breakup rumors in 2023 after fans noticed Simpson was no longer posting photos of her husband or wearing her wedding ring.

Simpson confirmed the couple’s separation in January after 10 years of marriage. She was previously married to Nick Lachey from 2002 to 2005.

“Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage,” Simpson told Us in a statement on January 13. “Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them. We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family.”

An insider exclusively told Us that Simpson was house-hunting in Los Angeles and has maintained a “very positive attitude” through what has been a “painful last year.”

The source added that Simpson is trying to keep things amicable with Johnson for the benefit of their kids. The pair share three children, Maxwell, 12, Ace, 11, and Birdie, 5.

As Simpson navigates her separation, she’s also continuing to work on her music. Nashville Canyon, Pt. 1 will be her first new release in 15 years when it drops on March 21. It will follow her Happy Christmas album, which she released in 2010.

Simpson is “anxious and excited to release it to the world,” a second source told Us in February.
