‘Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End’ Has the Opportunity to Put Goku vs Frieza to Shame

When it comes to legendary anime fight sequences, one cannot forget the influence Dragon Ball has on it. However, it must be mentioned that now Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is also redefining how a strong protagonist fights their battle.

If the battle between Goku and Frieza represents endurance and raw power, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End fights emphasize mastery of magic and strategy. This is because Frieren always picks battles after judging the consequences, unlike Goku or even Vegeta.

If Frieren really wishes to take on strong opponents, a battle between her and Serie could happen. But that is not going to take place in the end because of how differently Frieren and those around her think.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End can have more compelling battles

The battle between Goku and Frieza is legendary because of the stakes of the fight. We know there is a high chance Goku might get defeated or even killed because he is seeking out an opponent who can turn the tide against him anytime. However, something like that is not really possible for Frieren.

Yes, a conflict between Serie, the Great Mage from the Mythical Era, and Frieren will be a sight to see. But, considering how Frieren approaches her fights, they will never even agree to this, as there is literally no reason to fight.

On top of that, both of their personalities and philosophies are completely different from that of any character from Dragon Ball. Frieren and Serie do not seek strength, but rather, one is interested in collecting magic, and the other in attaining peace.

Frieren or most mages also do not like direct confrontation. The first lesson that Flamme gives to Frieren is to hide her vast magic power so that she can trick demons when the time comes. Something like this will be labeled as cowardly in the Dragon Ball world and will not be followed by any of the heroes, like Goku or Vegeta.

They would like a head-on battle, and Frieren would prefer to stay far away from any problems if she can.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End face-offs are meaningful in their own way

The art of warfare is very different in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End from what one would expect from a typical Shonen series. Here, the characters fight, but the purpose of that fight takes a bigger importance than the combat itself.

An appropriate example is Frieren facing off against Aura. Frieren has always had an apathetic and uninterested approach towards her enemies, even though she knows they are powerful. Aura was a threat to her, but Frieren only engaged her in a battle when she had to come back to the town Aura was trying to invade.

Though Aura herself had no idea about Frieren’s strength, we steadily realized she would die when we found Frieren could mask her magical powers. Contrary to this, in Dragon Ball, fights often rely on sudden power-ups and last-minute strategies.

Thus, it is safe to say that Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End fights, in a way, redefines what it means to be strong in anime. Yes, it can take a more traditional route like Dragon Ball, but it will not.
