In the world of Naruto, the Sharingan is considered to be one of the strongest dojutsu abilities that can literally perform miracles. From altering the opponent’s vision to changing reality, the Sharigan can do it all. And one of the most dangerous Sharingan users in the entire series is Itachi Uchiha, the character who contributed a lot to the success of Naruto.

Itachi was a world-class shinobi whose skills, even at a young age, were on a level that had never been seen before in Konoha’s history. He cleared the Chunin exams at the age of 10, became an Anbu captain at the age of 12, and massacred his entire clan at the age of 13. The level of maturity, talent, and strategy that Itachi showed at such a young age was nothing short of extraordinary.
Itachi’s talent helped him master Izanami, one of the most broken abilities in Naruto, which had the power to “decide” the destiny of its opponent. However, the fact that it was only created to counter a single villain reduced its significance and also affected Itachi’s image within the storyline.
The unprecedented power of Izanami in Naruto
A Sharigan user can master a lot of different dojutsu abilities, but only a few of them are capable of unlocking the Izanagi and the Izanami. The Izanagi had the power to grant the control of reality to its user and allow them to change it as long as it is active. It was first used by Danzo during his battle with Sasuke in Naruto: Shippuden.
According to Itachi, Izanami was created as a counter of Izanagi as the technique became quite powerful. Although they are a pair, Izanami is not used as much as Izanagi. Izanami has the power to decide the destiny of its opponent and put them inside a loop of illusion created by repetitive events in reality. It is quite complex and thus requires a lot of work.

Both Izanagi and Izanami are deemed the strongest Sharingan abilities, and while there is a way to counter Izanagi, there is no such counter revealed for Izanami in Naruto. Thus, it is safe to assume that Izanami is even more dangerous and lethal than Izanagi.
Izanami could have been used in a much better way in Naruto
The power and threat of Izanami are on a completely different level, but it is not at all justified within the storyline. This is because Izanami has only been used once in the entire narrative, and that was to defeat Kabuto, who became too strong for anyone else to deal with. Itachi was the only one capable of using it, and this negatively affected its significance.

The fact that Izanami was only created by Masashi Kishimoto to counter Kabuto dulls its danger as a Sharigan ability in a big way. Also, it somewhat hurts Itachi’s character development in his final moments in Naruto.
Literally exists just to beat Kabuto. I miss when the sharingan were just super good eyes.

The unique complexity of the ability could have added more substance to the story, especially to the hype around the unprecedented powers of Sharingan and the Uchiha clan.
Although it is understandable that using Izanami once can result in losing the light within the Sharigan, it should have been given more importance within the Naruto storyline, just like other prominent forbidden jutsus.
Naruto is available to watch on Hulu.
