“This world and space really exists”: Why ‘The Apothecary Diaries’ Left Director Crying in the Pursuit of Absolute Perfection

The Apothecary Diaries has been winning over fans since it began airing in 2023. The subtle, simplistic narrative, edge of the seat mysteries, and most of all the dynamic characters, have made a prominent place in fans’ hearts by now.

Moreover, the delicate way the series deals with such sensitive, and often dark themes also goes a long way to endear it to fans. However, the journey for perfection is never easy.

In fact, The Apothecary Diaries’ director went so far into etching out details for the series, that he was left crying his eyes out in their pursuit of perfection for the series. This has intrigued fans even more as to what sort of brilliance awaits them as the series progresses in the ongoing Season 2.

The Apothecary Diaries’ director Akinori Fudesaka wanted to achieve absolute perfection while making Season 2

Akinori Fudesaka served as the assistant director, in The Apothecary Diaries Season 1. Season 2, however, found him in the director’s chair. As a result, his responsibilities increased in magnitude. Especially since the shift in director directly translates to a shift in direction on screen.

This has been evident to fans in the way the ongoing season is exploring new angles to narrate the story better. Fudesaka noted the same in an interview with Mantan Web recently.

The idea is that we’re capturing [the story] with the camera. In order to accurately convey the events and emotions that are occurring, I try to convey that through camera angles, colors, backgrounds, filming processing, and sound.

Moreover, the director claimed that he tries to be as accurate as possible while conveying the characters, their dynamics with others, as well as their emotions properly through these angles.

This not only makes the animation fluid, which adds to the storytelling style, but also prevents the audience from getting confused about the essence of a sequence.

By properly showing the relationships between the characters on screen so that there’s no disjointedness, I want viewers to feel like this world and space really exists, and immerse themselves in the experience.

However, achieving something like that is not exactly an easy feat. Now, the fans would more than agree that the director might be well on his way to achieve the same in The Apothecary Diaries Season 2. However, Fudesaka himself had to deal with quite a few troubles while making it that left him emotional.

The Apothecary Diaries’ director Akinori Fudesaka was left in tears while making Season 2

The Season 2 of The Apothecary Diaries is picking up speed with each episode. While Maomao and Jinshi seem to be immersed in their slowly developing relationship, there seems to be a darker mystery that’s getting constructed in the rear palace with none the wiser.

Interestingly, this season has also tried to delve a bit more into Jinshi’s parentage and his dynamic with the Emperor at last. As such, fans seem to be waiting with bated breath to figure out what’s waiting for them further on in the show.

At any rate, creating such a perfect mixture of intrigue, emotions, whimsy, mystery, all with a budding romance in the background couldn’t have been easy. As the director noted in his interview with the outlet, “Accurate may sound easy, but it is also difficult”.

However, that is exactly what The Apothecary Diaries insists on, i.e., “to convey the characters’ emotions accurately”. This pursuit for perfection, though, left Akinori Fudesaka in tears.

I found myself crying while correcting the storyboard (laughs). The story is well-woven with attractive characters, so I’m trying to show the emotions and thoughts of the characters and connect them together.

Thankfully for the director, fans seem to be loving every second of The Apothecary Diaries Season 2. With Episode 9 set to air on March 7th, the anticipation to find out more about the current mystery involving the Empress Dowager is off the charts.

The Apothecary Diaries is streaming on Crunchyroll.
