“No more 3D CGI please”: ‘Berserk’ Fans Were Scammed Not Once But Twice in Hopes of a Respectable Anime Adaptation

Berserk is a massively popular legacy series that has attracted and captivated millions of fans across generations. Fans have been desperately hoping for an anime adaptation that is worthy of Kentaro Miura’s legendary manga. But each time, they have been met with nothing but disappointment and betrayal.

First, the fans had to stomach the infamous CGI-heavy Berserk (2016) and Berserk (2017) adaptations. They had turned anime into something else, wherein the essence was being overpowered by how stiff the animation was and its lackluster execution.

There seemed to be no hope for a good, more faithful Berserk adaptation until a group (of alleged fans) brought up an idea to fan-make it in the way they had always wanted to see it be made. The fans can trust fellow fans, right? So they did and donated to the cause, only for its creators to disappear with the Kickstarter money.

Betrayal After Betrayal: ‘Berserk’ Fans Can’t Catch a Break

The most recent scam was one that hurt the Berserk fans deeply. When a group of people share a similar set of beliefs and opinions, they are bound to understand, respect, and trust each other.

That is why, when a few fellow fans claimed they should make Berserk themselves (being experts and veterans), it seemed believable. In fact, the fans wanted to believe them. It was comparatively a recent adaptation of Berserk and a remake seemed a hasty decision.

So, being hopeful (and not seeing any other way of getting a faithful adaptation), the fans contributed to the ’cause’ that turned out to be the betterment of the scammers, who ran away with the money after closing their Twitter account.

The fan-made Berserk group said that they would release a couple of episodes but kept delaying, the only thing they released was a ‘teaser image.’ Being scammed in such a way was a shock and a lesson for the Berserk community, proving that their desperation is not going to give them a good adaptation soon.

Can CGI ever work for ‘Berserk’?

Many Berserk fans blame CGI (Computer-generated imagery) for the bad portrayal of the anime. CGI itself isn’t inherently bad and it has been used prominently in many anime. The usage of CGI is growing more and more each day with the ease of use it provides.

Technology is advancing by the day and CGI is a way to make any visual media feel more realistic. Many anime utilize CGI, but disguise it properly to make it look like 2D imagery. This is where Berserk falls short.

Anime like Land of the Lustrous and Trigun: Stampede proves that 3D animation can look stunning if handled by experts who know what they are doing. But Berserk (2017) seems to not have realized this as the anime looks like its somewhere between a pop-up book and an anatomy lesson.

With Miura’s passing, Berserk needs a good, carefully crafted anime adaptation to immortalize his name and contributions as well as showcase his work to the newer generations. But it does not seem likely anytime soon.

Berserk is streaming on Crunchyroll.
