Formula One has been an incredible journey for Lewis Hamilton. Being the first (and only) Black driver in F1 history, Hamilton set a blazing inspiration for those who dream of following in his footsteps. The 7-time world champion has little to complain of after his brilliant career and legacy in the sport, but when it comes to one rival, Hamilton is not as level-headed as he likes to be.

In 2021, after one of the most controversial races in Formula’s history, Lewis Hamilton found his 8th championship title slip through his fingers as Red Bull driver Max Verstappen raced to the finish line. The Dutchman has since then won three other consecutive drivers’ championship titles, making him only the second driver in F1 history to ever win their first four championships in a row.
However, for a young driver to be so ruthless on track would require cutthroat instinct and the willingness to play dirty. And this is where the two legends clashed.
Lewis Hamilton’s rivalry against Max Verstappen

Lewis Hamilton has always been the picture of perfection since his reign at Formula One. With 7 world championships and not a single controversy to his name, whether on-track or off, the Briton has become somewhat of a mythical figure in the sport. But racing against Mad Max Verstappen brought out 3 of the Seven Deadly Sins in Hamilton as well, namely, Pride, Wrath, and Envy.
In 2021, Hamilton made his hatred for the Dutch driver quite vocally known as the pair competed for their championship title. Both had equal stakes in the 2021 Grand Prix season as the legendary Hamilton was on his way to clinch his 8th title while the rising star of F1, Max Verstappen, was slicing his way through the tracks to win his first ever drivers’ championship.
But the fight for the winning ticket got too muddled, and Hamilton revealed (via Planet F1):
I’ve raced a lot of drivers in my life, in the 28 years. There’s a few at the top which are over the limit. Rules kinda don’t apply, or they don’t think of the rules. He’s over the limit, for sure. I’ve avoided collisions on so many occasions with the guy.
This is where pride and envy played a part as Hamilton, the star driver of Mercedes, made his team principal Toto Wolff promise that the latter would never approach Max Verstappen to sign him for the team as long as Hamilton was a part of it. Toto Wolff, valuing the Brit’s principles, shook on it.
Toto Wolff looks to break his vow to Lewis Hamilton

As Lewis Hamilton nears the end of his Formula 1 career, it would be a shame for the 7-time world champion to have never raced in red. Ferrari has been the dream car for every driver who has ever gotten behind the wheel, whether for sport or pleasure. Now, it is finally Hamilton’s turn to race for the Maranello team.
But Hamilton’s exit from Mercedes also leaves a vacuum within the Silver Arrows, and Toto Wolff would not be doing his job right if he did not seek out the best driver to fill the spot. As such, it was only natural that Verstappen’s name would come up in that conversation.
In the latest Drive to Survive season, Wolff is recorded talking to his wife as he disclosed his wish to make a move for Max Verstappen: “I haven’t talked to him because I promised Lewis not to talk to him. But I will have the conversation now.” However, given Red Bull’s racing stats and its powerful performance for the last 4 seasons, there is a slim chance of that happening.
Wolff himself admitted how difficult it is to talk to Verstappen about changing teams and claimed there was only a 1% chance that he would change his mind anytime soon. But the possibility of Verstappen ever making the switch and Wolff keeping a window open for the Dutch would make for a very interesting Season 8 of Drive to Survive.
Drive to Survive Season 7 launches on March 7, 2025.
