Actors Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are synonymous with the roles of Dean and Sam Winchester, monster-hunting brothers at the center of the fantasy-drama series Supernatural. The series lasted fifteen seasons, with the two co-stars developing a strong bond on and off-screen over the years that fans have come to enjoy.

However, the brotherly bond between Ackles and Padalecki was threatened when the actors nearly feuded after the show’s conclusion when the former started development on a spin-off series without the latter’s knowledge. Therefore, the feud could’ve tarnished the show’s legacy, but thankfully, the former co-stars sorted things out, and here is how it all went down.
Jensen Ackles explained the real reason for his feud with Supernatural co-star Jared Padalecki
At its core, Supernatural is a series about the relationship between brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. Over its fifteen-season run, the actors developed a sibling-like bond, which has been a major draw for the show’s fans.

However, the bond between the co-stars was threatened after Ackles started developing a prequel/spin-off series without Padalecki’s knowledge. As a result, the latter took to social media to voice his displeasure about being left out of the loop (via X).
During an appearance on the Inside of You podcast, Ackles discussed Padalecki voicing his disappointment and explained that he was keeping the project a secret because it was in the very early stages of development. He said:
I had a long text from Jared and he was really bummed out and I remember my heart just sank … In hindsight, that could’ve been a step that was avoided, but he did it and it happened and we dealt with it. He and I, we’re great.
Ackles explained that he was forced to announce the spin-off’s development after the trades got wind of it.
Furthermore, Ackles revealed that the announcement was made in a hurry and acknowledged that he understood why the news hurt his co-star. Therefore, the two actors spoke with each other and resolved the issue, as Ackles promised to keep Padalecki updated regarding the project, which became the spin-off series The Winchesters, lasting only one season.
Jared Padalecki addressed the Supernatural spin-off misunderstanding with Jensen Ackles

During a separate interview with The New York Times, Padalecki shared his side of the story, admitting that he was initially bummed out after the spin-off was announced to have Ackles attached as an executive producer. However, Padalecki revealed he understood his co-star’s perspective after a quick chat.
I love Jensen deeply. He’s my brother — he has been for many years, and he always will be, no matter what.
Padalecki made the above statement, adding that he and Ackles reached an understanding after a conversation wherein they exchanged their opinions. The Sam Winchester actor admitted that he respected his former co-star’s opinion, given how long they have worked together.
Ultimately, the feud could have nearly destroyed the show’s legacy had the spin-off driven a wedge between the two. Nonetheless, all is well between the duo, and they will once again unite for the upcoming fifth and final season of The Boys, where Ackles has already appeared as Soldier Boy.
Supernatural is streaming on Netflix.
