Dismissed public sector recruits deserve better – Dr. Alex Ampaabeng

Former Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Alex Ampaabeng, has rejected claims that a wave of last-minute public sector recruitment took place in December 2024, calling for the reinstatement of newly appointed workers who were dismissed following the change in government.

Expressing his frustration over the situation in a Facebook post sighted by MyNewsGH, Dr. Ampaabeng recounted a distressing conversation with a young man who had secured a position at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) after years of unemployment, only to be handed a dismissal letter.

“He sounded shattered, like the world is coming to an end. His soft voice still rings in my ear with the message, ‘I’m done, God, why me?’” he shared.

He insisted that the affected recruits, many of whom endured a rigorous hiring process, did not deserve such treatment.

“The fact is, this man, and all those recently recruited graduates in the public sector, don’t deserve to go through this. Period!”

Dismissing reports that ministries and agencies had engaged in unauthorized hiring, Dr. Ampaabeng clarified that no financial clearance was issued for recruitment in December 2024. As the Deputy Minister responsible for financial clearance at the time, he expressed disappointment over the revocation of appointments, arguing that it was unjustified.

“It is disappointing to see the youth who have successfully gone through various stages of the recruitment process being dismissed on the basis of ‘earning a last-minute and unjustified appointment,’” he lamented.

Dr. Ampaabeng’s call for reinstatement underscores growing concerns over the fate of these workers, as uncertainty looms over their future employment status.
