What fans feared the most has finally transpired in the season premiere of Daredevil: Born Again. Since the inclusion of Karen and Foggy in the MCU version of the show, rumors alleged that their lives would be short-lived in the MCU, especially after the confirmation of Bullseye’s casting.

To fans’ shock, the MCU did swing that way and killed off Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson. However, several cues in the episode, followed by the showrunner’s comments on the character’s future, suggest otherwise.

With Season 2 already on the move in terms of production, the Marvel Head of Streaming, TV, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, has confirmed that “Deborah and Elden are coming back for Season 2” (via Brandon Davis).
I don’t think there’s a Matt Murdock story without those two characters, and I’m excited to see them both in Season 2 as well.
Although some presumed this would boil down to flashback sequences, per one easter-egg pointed out by some eagle-eyed viewers, Foggy could still be alive in the MCU. The easter-egg in question is the number 468, which could very much be a nod to Daredevil issue #468, The Secret Life of Foggy Nelson.

While the volume number of 88 had some fans confused, it’s important to note that the legacy number, without considering different volumes, is indeed 468.
The is number for this volume is 88, but its legacy number (the original numbering for the original title without considering different volumes) is 468.

Even though this could very much be a stretch, given Winderbaum’s comments on the character’s future, this doesn’t seem too unlikely.
Foggy’s death was on the cards from the get-go

Amidst the creative overhaul, one thing that remained constant was Foggy’s death, which was inevitable in the eyes of showrunner Dario Scardapane. However, one thing they did improve upon, in contrast to the previous version, was the death of Foggy itself, as, unlike the heart-wrenching scene in the season premiere, the original draft involved an off-screen fate for him.
He detailed (via Screen Rant):
It was an inevitability! Truth be told…In the original version, before I came in, he had died, but it was off-screen, and for me, it couldn’t be off-screen… That loss has to be felt, and that loss has to be an earthquake. That shatters Matt, [it] makes him put away the mask, [it] has a ripple effect. And again, Karen’s not gone. So what is the breakup of a family after a death in the family, and what happens when they come back together?
Given the weight behind Foggy’s death, it’ll be interesting to see how the writers will stretch Elden Henson’s story in the foreseeable future.
Daredevil: Born Again is available to stream on Disney Plus.
