Stratagems are the bread and butter of Helldivers 2‘s combat system. While you can do anything from calling orbital strikes to spawning an Exosuit, one category of stratagems that often gets missed are the Sentry stratagems. These are automated turrets that give us much needed support on the battlefield.
There are seven total Sentry stratagems in Helldivers 2, but not all of them are created equal. You’ll find that some excel at crowd control, while others are better at firepower and armor piercing. 7. Tesla Tower
The Tesla Tower is easily the least reliable sentry Stratagem you can use in Helldivers 2. Funnily enough, it doesn’t even have sentry in its name. Its electric arcs can damage multiple enemies at once, but the limited range and unpredictability of its attacks make it more useless than useful.
The reason for this is that it can possibly cause friendly fire because it just shocks anything within its range, including you and your fellow Helldivers.
6. Machine Gun Sentry
The Machine Gun Sentry is one of the first sentries you unlock and it’s a decent starting option. Unfortunately, the game gives you better choices soon after. The Machine Gun Sentry is reliable for suppressive fire against weaker enemies, but its low damage and lack of armor penetration mean it struggles as you progress.
5. Gatling Sentry
Speaking of progress, The Gatling Sentry is an upgrade to the Machine Gun Sentry in nearly every way. It has a higher rate of fire and better armor penetration, making it more effective in every way you’ll need. However, its biggest drawback is that it still struggles versus heavily armored enemies. It’s an excellent choice for early to mid-game missions, but once again, there’s a limit.
4. Autocannon Sentry
And that’s where The Autocannon Sentry comes in handy. It is one of the most effective sentry stratagems against heavily armored enemies and fires rounds that can punch through even the toughest foes that you’ll encounter.

This makes it an essential tool for dealing with Hulks, Chargers, and Bile Titans. The Autocannon Sentry’s flaw is that it often wastes shots on smaller enemies instead of focusing on the high-value targets it’s best suited for.
3. EMS Mortar Sentry
Unlike the other sentries on this list, the EMS Mortar Sentry does not deal direct damage. Instead, it launches electromagnetic shells that create a static field that slows enemies caught in its blast radius. This makes a must-have if you’re on defensive missions, as it can delay enemies and give you more time. Do note that you’ll want to pair the EMS Mortar Sentry with other sentries to maximize its effectiveness.
2. Rocket Sentry
The Rocket Sentry is a strong balance between crowd control and armor penetration. Its explosive rockets can take out groups of enemies and deal decent damage to the larger enemies that you face in the mission. However, it does not have true armor penetration, meaning heavily armored enemies won’t take as much damage as they would from other specialized sentries. You can consider it a solid all-rounder that fits into many different mission types.
1. Mortar Sentry
The Mortar Sentry is the top dog of the rankings due to its sheer destructive power. This sentry bombards enemies with high-damage explosives, making it one of the most effective ways to clear out large groups of foes. Its long range makes it a versatile tool that you can use for both offense and defense.
But similar to the Tesla Tower, its biggest drawback is the potential for friendly fire. Helldivers caught in its blast radius will be eliminated just as easily as enemies. So pay attention if you use it.
