Young school girl, 11, killed after being struck by car while getting off bus in Derry

AN 11-year-old school girl has been killed following a horror collision in Derry yesterday.

The young girl was struck by a car after she was getting off a schoolbus on the Hillhead Road, Castledawson, Co Derry.

The tragic incident occurred at around 4pm yesterday.

Inspector Adair of the PSNI said: “There was a large number of people in the vicinity at the time who may have recorded video footage of the scene.

“I would ask anyone with footage not to share it on social media, but instead forward it to police through the Major Incident Public Portal.

“This footage will be of great assistance to officers investigating the collision.

“The Hillhead Road has reopened following this serious collision and our investigation continues.

“Anyone with any information, dash-cam footage or images taken at the scene can also call on 101, quoting reference number 1038 05/03/25.”

Reports can also be submitted to the non-emergency reporting form online at www.psni.police.uk/makeareport.

The Major Incident Public Portal can be accessed at mipp.police.uk/operation/PSNI25U07-PO2.

This comes after an 11-year-old boy who was stabbed in the back by a fellow pupil at primary school is expected to remain in hospital for days as he recovers from surgery.

The young lad was knifed with a large blade and suffered a punctured lung on Tuesday morning at St Finian’s School in Finglas, north Dublin.

He underwent surgery and had been in intensive care but as a precautionary measure.

He had suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

A source told the Irish Sun: “The boy has had surgery and is out the other side of that.

“His injuries are non-life threatening but it wasn’t as if it was a slit with a knife, this was a deep wound and very serious.

“It’s a very traumatising thing for him to go through but supports are in place for him.”

The other child is suspected to have brought the weapon onto school grounds.

Work is continuing to establish what exactly led to the incident.

However the main priority is that all pupils as well as staff are being supported.
