President John Dramani Mahama has justified the government’s decision to hold Ghana’s 68th Independence Day celebrations at the Flagstaff House instead of the usual Black Star Square, citing economic constraints.
“We are compelled to scale down the celebrations due to the economic crisis our nation is currently experiencing,” Mahama stated.
According to the president, past celebrations have required significant logistical, security, and infrastructure expenses, putting a strain on the national budget.
“Large-scale celebrations come at a cost we cannot afford right now. Last year alone, we spent millions of Ghana cedis on this event, and estimates for this year were even higher.”
He emphasized that while the celebration’s scale had been reduced, its importance remained unchanged.
“Ghana’s Independence is the single most important event in our history. But when reality calls for a different approach, we must heed it and act accordingly.”
Mahama further highlighted the need for fiscal prudence, stating that saving on this event aligns with the government’s broader commitment to responsible spending.
