“Such a good way of showing his true motivations”: Tite Kubo Isn’t Far From Oda When Bleach Foreshadowed Gin’s Loyalty With His Zanpakuto

An interesting power system, cool characters, and memorable villains are some of the main highlights of Tite Kubo’s Bleach. But, one thing that doesn’t get enough credit is the foreshadowing throughout the story. There were many important storylines that were hidden in glimpses before they played out.

Some of these hidden signs were subtle, while others were more poetic. Gin Ichimaru’s character arc was sad and tragic. For the most part of his story, his true motivations remained concealed. He was one of the villains.

The revelation about his motivations was shocking, but Kubo had a small detail in mind that tied up beautifully with Gin’s character. This one instance might seem unimportant in the long run, but it’s a testament to the mangaka’s genius. So, here’s an exploration of the foreshadowing in Bleach.

The hidden signs about Gin’s true intentions in Tite Kubo’s Bleach

Gin Ichimaru was introduced as a creepy character with unclear motivations and alignment. Even though he was a Soul Reaper, it was difficult to completely trust him. Many characters in the story felt the same unease around Gin, including Rukia and Ichigo. Rangiku was the only person Gin was somewhat close to. He continued to lie to everyone up until the very end.

Whether it was about his powers or his intentions, he either conveniently dodged the questions or lied about them. The first time he revealed what his Bankai was to Ichigo, and he didn’t share his true powers. The next time his Bankai was discussed, its true powers were revealed. A Reddit comment pointed out how it was a great hint for what was coming up.

Similar to how Rangiku’s Zanpaku-to used to turn into ash, Gin’s true Bankai turned his blade into dust for a fraction of seconds. These two always shared a close bond with one another. Even though Gin’s true intentions were unknown up until his death. Everything made sense in that moment. His Bankai was a reflection of his allegiance to Rangiku.

He could do anything except for betraying her. The moment he revealed his Bankai, which was the same as Rangiku, his true motivation became clear. It makes one wonder how it must have felt for him to be misunderstood the entire time. With this one revelation, the different pieces of his character arc fell into place at once.

The foreshadowing in Bleach doesn’t get enough credit

Apart from this moment, there were many scenes that prepared us for the future events in Bleach. Zaraki didn’t even know the name of his Zanpaku-to, but his flashback revealed Yachiru’s connection with the sword. The moment Zaraki asked Yachiru where she came from, she touched his sword, hinting at her origin.

Similarly, we had no idea about Unohana’s past. Despite having a calm composure, the reason everyone was scared of her was a result of her reputation. Even Ichigo’s interaction with Gin hinted at what was coming up. Even though Eiichiro Oda is revered as the master of foreshadowing, Tite Kubo is seemingly not far behind.

Bleach is available to stream on Netflix.
